Help!! My DH and I have started with a walking group but my feet HURT. I have a "hot spot" about the size of a quarter or so on each foot right in the middle of the ball of my foot. It feels like a blister that's under many layers of skin versus a blister on top if that makes sense. I got some suggestions from the group on shoes tonight...but does anyone have any suggestions on how to make them feel better? I'm hobbling around like an old lady - LOL! :rotfl2:

Go get a blister treatment pack at Walgreen or whatever pharmacy you have near you.

I actually have the same thing and I looked it up. It could be a wart. Does it have little black threads in it? I do not have the black threads but I think mine is some sort of a callus under the skin. It is not painful right now but it was last summer. If it feels like there is a rock in your shoe web md said it is most likely a wart. Of course it might have been there before but the extra pressure aggravated it. Go to the foot doctor. You might be making things worse by walking on it. I am actually scheduled for the dermatologist next week and I am going to see if he knows what mine is.

Make sure you're not wearing cotton socks. Get a good athletic sock made from moisture wicking material. Also get your shoe fit checked out. You may have friction at that area between the shoe and foot. This might sound weird, but try covering the area with grey tape, also known as duct tape! I run 20-25 miles a week and tape my two smaller toes on each foot. Used to have terrible blisters there but the grey tape fixed that.

Whatever you do, don't abandon the exercise program because of this. Stick with it! Good luck!

After buying 'cheap' shoes I finally went and bought a good pair of shoes, from a running store. The difference in how my feet feel is amazing.. The folks at the store watched how I walked, checked sizing etc etc then gave me choices.. I suggest doing that also.

I was going to suggest this too. I changed socks about 1-2 years ago and have had maybe 2 blisters since. The only bad thing is that they CAN be pricey (I think mine are $8-$10 per pair) but they are SOOOO worth it.

I'm going to get new socks for my husband. He refuses to get new shoes even though he needs new ones then complains about blisters. :sad2: I'm now thinking if socks might help a little. (He really needs the shoes though)

Shoes and socks!

If you cannot tell me how many miles your shoes have or at least their age then I would submit that the shoes are more than likely worn out. Shoes have a life of about 350 - 600 miles. They should also only be worn for the activity of walking/running. Leave them in the closet when shopping, mowing or heading to the pub. Also, every day use shortens their life. Alternate if possible.

As pp, tech fabric socks over cotton.

Have fun

OMG I cannot stress enough to make sure you have proper shoes and socks! I ran a 5k this weekend and was the first run I've had 'proper' shoes for really anything.. The difference in my feet was amazing.. I tend to walk on the inside of my feet so I have new balance that have stability for <whatever it's called when you walk on the inside of your feet> and balega?? socks and my feet felt awesome.. Now, where I havent been running a lot, my thighs were killing me yesterday (only sore, no pain so it's good :cool1:) but my feet were in great shape..

Well the group we joined went over gear one of the first sessions and we went and got good socks because all we had were cotton. We both got New Balance socks and DH loves his. It seems like the blister situation has actually gotten worse....I had a hot spot on one foot before them and now I have a blister on each foot. But I know they are better than cotton. My shoes are Avia and actually pretty new. I can actually see the blisters now so know that's what the problem is....but they are really rather deep-instead of being just on the service where I have had blisters before. I did go with the group tonight and just couldn't go my normal speed and was bringing up the tail end of the group. One of the mentors suggested trying foot powder to reduce friction too. I may try a different pair of shoes Thursday but what started out as discomfort tonight is now pain. I don't know what else to try. I have walked fairly consistently in the past and have participated in bootcamp and NEVER had this type of blister or pain. Any and all suggestions are definitely welcome. I refuse to quit because of this!

Maybe try some body glide on the bottom of your foot? When you are walking, do you feet your foot rubbing in that spot, or is it pressure? (rubbing vs pressure, do you know what I mean?)

Maybe try a different brand of socks. I have some Under Armor ones from the outlet (I love the UA outlet - only 30 mins from my house!) and they were about $12 for 2 pairs. I also have c9's from target. They were about $11 for 3 pairs. For me, I wear c9's when crosstraining (workout video), but only UA's when running. They hug my feet better and are thinner. Fit into my shoe better? The c9's are too thick in the arch of the foot for my liking when running, but are ok for cross training. That's just mho.

Good luck! Keep us updated.

There are lots of things one can try...

Powder may work, but sweating may defeat this in a hurry. Runner's lube I think may be a better idea. Simply apply to the area. But lube can also go the opposite way and create additional slippage. Mole skin is the next in the line if things to try. Simply apply to the areas. Make sure your feet are very dry as you apply, else it may come off. I would lightly apply lube to the surface of the mole skin once you apply them. A cheaper version of mole skin - Duct Tape. I have a small role in my travel bag so I have it with me if I have a hot spot develop from travelling to a race.

So one other question....I am letting my feet rest today and then we have our group tomorrow night. They hurt bad today, but I can manage getting around. They are obviously not going to heal before tomorrow night when I intend to try powder and maybe different shoes....at what point do I quit making it worse and start over? I don't want to miss any sessions is the bottom line.....but I really don't want this to get much worse either.

I have several hot spots on my feet. Have you tried engo (goengo.com). These are patches which go on your shoes and create less friction (think teflon). I have completed 6 1/2 marathons and on the last one I put these in my shoes. These definitely helped - maybe they can help you as well.
