Calling All Seniors!

I'm 67 and Disneyland is our closest park. I go two or three times a year with DD and DGD and DGS -- now ages 6 and 2. We try to go to WDW about every five years. It's hectic trying to keep up! Last trip, I ended up wearing Merrill sandals with socks. A really bad look, but my feet and legs lasted all day! We usually stay in a hotel for two nights and have two or three park days at DL. For WDW, we usually stay a week. I make sure to have dining reservations in order to rest.
I hope to keep going for many more years! :-)

Probably because we are much more active and aware of how important it is to keep moving.

My parents passed away young, my Dad of a heart attack at 55 and my Mom at 65. I have passed both and when I think back to them. They were olderish at a younger age. Didn't go out a lot, didn't travel much. The longer we are able to keep active, the better off we are.
My mother was active enough. Worked in a yarn factory for years. Stood on her feet, walked miles back and forth on the machines. Walked the 5 blocks to work every day. Stopped about 50 ish. Became a grandmother around the same time..

DW and I are in our late 60's and have been doing Disney vacations since 1990 or so. The parks have changed and we have changed. Not always for the better! We still enjoy Disney, but just differently than we used to. It is great to have this place for the young at heart to meet and share ideas and experiences. I looked all over and could not find may resources for Disney Seniors so I started a blog for Disney Grandparents. I am really interested in reading tips, hints, and experiences!

As to whether you qualify as a senior to participate in this forum, consider that you know you are a senior when:

1. You have grandchildren that are 7 and 8 years old that can do everything on a computer and iPhone better than you can.

2. You often wake up in the morning with some new pains in parts of your body and cannot think of anything that caused them.

3. When you buy a new car, you need your son or daughter to set up, and teach you how to use, the “infotainment” system in the car and, regardless, you still do not know what many of the screen buttons are for and can never find the ones you really need.

4. You remember what life was like before cell phones, email, text messaging, Amazon, and large (and flat) screen TVs. It was a pleasant time when communication with anyone not within easy walking or driving distance was done only by home phone or mail and you did not have to spend hours going through emails and text messages.

5. You spent many years never seeing 5 teenagers sitting around a table in a room and communicating with each other mainly via text messages.

6. You pine for the days when you paid for things either in person (at a store or other place), or via a check mailed to the recipient, and thus could keep track of what you were spending rather than trying to find out by reviewing huge numbers of emails, hidden within a bunch of other emails, setting out automatic monthly or other payments for things you have purchased.

7. You remember watching the daily news on TV in the early evening and then late at night, including often watching Walter Cronkite, and recall that anything that was opinion, political or otherwise, was presented separately, designated as opinion and not real news.

8. You remember when airplanes had only two sets of seats, first class and economy, and all the economy seats on a plane were the same size and were actually fairly large and comfortable.

9. You remember when banks did not have all kinds of extra charges for using any service the bank had available, and when the only thing you paid for when taking a plane ride was the plane ticket.

10. You can remember when gas to fill a car cost less than $1.00 a gallon.

11. You recall smoking being allowed outside anywhere at Disney World.

12. You can remember buying a four-day park pass for $45 and an annual Pass for $100.

13. You can remember over a period of years often going to River Country and Discovery Island, and going on such things as 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, the Swan Boats, Mission to Mars, If You Had Wings, Magic Journeys, Horizons and World of Motion.

14. You remember that a restaurant reservation at Epcot was something you did in the morning in the park at stands designed for making such reservations.

15. You remember having trips when you went to the beach and into the water of Bay Lake and Seven Seas Lagoon.

Don't forget rotary phones

Heck, I remember WDW ticket books, and riding the “free” rides over and over when we ran out of tickets.
those were the days that if you were staying at one of the resorts and showed a piece of cardboard with the dates of your stay written in pen that you had to sign you could go just about anywhere. We stayed at Fort Wilderness and my friend's family stayed at the Contemporary and it felt so special to pull that thing out to get into the ferry. AND when they went to length of stay tickets for us, OMG, felt like we'd won the lottery to just loop around on space mountain, without worrying that we'd run out of E tickets!

anyone else remember when Crystal Palace was set up like a cafeteria?

Yup - I remember - also, if memory serves me right - I think it was open air - I remember birds flying all over the place and hopping on tables…

I want to add to the above list -
You fought to teach your kids how to tie their shoes before they headed to school and then if you're part of our segment of the aging crowd, got giddy when Velcro shoes hit the shelves (our son just could NOT figure that out!) Now you are beyond excited that elastic shoe laces are a thing because if you bend over to tie your shoes up there's a chance you'll never get back up off the floor!

If you drop something on the floor you think twice before picking it up. Bending down to look at something on the bottom shelf of a store might involve a lot of moaning and grasping for help to get back up.

Hey Dan !! It’s Linda formerly known as figmentvi. Hope you are doing well.

I just noticed the new forum as well. Seniors Unite !! 😁

Next June will be my 70th birthday and will be celebrating with THREE family trips to WDW. We wanted to do just one family reunion, but my family has grown so much that it wasn’t feasible. So we’re splitting it up into three trips. Believe it or not, Holly will also be celebrating a big birthday, her 50th.

As you may remember, I moved from the Virgin Islands to Asheville, NC. Needless to say it’s been a pretty tough past month and a half. The destruction here has been horrendous. It has been a stark reminder that NOTHING is more important than family and that time spent with family is precious. ❤️❤️
How is this for coincidence? I celebrated my 70th birthday in WDW earlier this year with DH, younger DD,DSIL, and 2 wonderful grandsons (19 and 20). Heading back this weekend on what started to be a trip for just DD and me, but has blossomed to include my gorgeous granddaughter, those awesome grandsons, my other DSIL and my daughter Holly, who will be turning 50!

I am so looking forward to seeing the 3 cousins enjoy a much-deserved break together. Going to try to recreate a few classic pictures from their only other trip together in 2008. Now that was an extra special one, because it was also their 89 yr old great-grandmother’s first ever trip to WDW! She loved it and we were lucky enough to take her to DL when she was 94.

So, you can see we are big believers that seniors enjoy the parks, and making new memories.

I remember that too. I think it was like a "Buffeteria", where you got a tray and selected your food. I can remember having the most delicious Chocolate Cake with cherries (Black Cores cake?) there.

That is WILD !!! Happy Birthday to you and your Holly.

I admitted I was a senior when I started getting excited about the discounts... which happened to be around 65.

I think I'm only about a half-senior.
