Calling all Princesses! (2014 Princess Half Marathon Weekend)- thread #2

So ensues the great forum search/healthfood store crawl. I don't do flour or sugar. I'm afraid, after 27 months of sugar free, if I consume a gel or sport beans, it's going to result in a gastrointestinal disaster that will not only be the most embarrassing thing to ever happen to me, but will also be talked about at future rD races for YEARS to come (if you get my drift). What I consume takes longer to digest, so no instant energy like with a gel.

Hoping to figure it out soon.

I don't know if you would have enough time to find it and test it prior to the race, or if it would even work for you (dietary restrictions, etc.), but I use Generation UCAN for fueling. It's formulated from "superstarch" and the theory behind it is it stabilizes your blood sugar and doesn't cause the spikes and crashes that come from using simpler sugar-based endurance fuels. It is also pretty easy on the GI system. For a 2-ish hour half marathon, I drink one packet prior to the race and don't need anything else during. For longer races I do take more during the race, either in a handheld bottle or gel flask. In any case, even if you couldn't use it for Princess you might want to look into it for longer-term training and racing.

Question re: spectators - my DH is coming with me (shhh....don't tell the kids where we're going....) but not running. We are staying at Bay Lake - could someone tell me if this is feasible:

- Have him come with me in the morning (he does NOT want to do this, but I'll likely wake him up anyway), see me start, maybe like at the 0.5 or 1 mile point?
- Take the monorail to Contemporary, see me around mile marker 5
- Hoof it on over to the TTC (via monorail), mile marker 7+ (ish?)
- Take the monorail back to Epcot to see the finish

Can spectators move around that easily? Of course, this would mean that the monorail would be fully functioning at that hour. This is my first ever race and would love to see DH as often as possible. (Hoping he can also take any layers that I strip off along the way, too. lol)

My parents and bf have seen me at the start every time, for some reason I have always been able to find them and it isn't really that dark along the street because all of the street lights are on. This sounds really tight to me, especially if you are running below an 11 mm. My first year, they tried to see me at the start, castle, and finish and ending up missing me at the castle and finish line because the monorails were so crowded and backed up that it took 45 mins for what should have taken 15 to get to Main Street.

Now every year, they plan to see me at the start and then go directly to the finish as soon as I go by at mile .25ish because it is much more important to me that they are there when I finish. I would try to decide on where it is important that you see him and then pick 2 or maybe 3 locations. Start, castle, finish is do-able provided transportation is running on time but I wouldn't suggest trying for more than that, especially if he misses you at one of those locations and then consequently doesn't make it to the next one on time.

Thanks for sharing! I love the designs - excited to get the 10k one!

After reading the entire blog hop (which I LOVED...thank you for that:love:), I am starting to second guess my pre and post race plans.

On the day before the race, my mother-in-law, sister-in-law, and I are planning to get up around 8:30 and head to Magic Kingdom. We want to have lunch at Be Our Guest, ride a bunch of rides, have an early dinner in the Castle, and then head back around 6:00 for some shut-eye. My initial thought was that we wanted to be tired early, and walking around the park would help us get some sleep; however, now I'm wondering whether we should take it easier that day and rest our feet. We have a Castle reservation though, and that would be tough to get on a different day. Am I crazy to do MK the day before the race?

Also, on the day of the race, we plan to take it easy, head back to the resort for some hot tub time and napping, and then go to Downtown Disney for dinner and the Happily Ever After party. We figured we would probably be tired, and we didn't want to push ourselves too hard; however, now I'm wondering whether we will feel excited and want to go to a park for the day. I'm also wondering if we should book a lunch/ brunch somewhere instead of our dinner. If so, what time would we even book it?

Can anyone who has run this before tell me what you think about pre-race and post-race planning. I am really not sure whether to change our plans or keep them. Also, I really don't want to be changing around fastpasses when I'm there, but I'm totally okay with changing them from home. We only have 2 1/2 days worth of park tickets (the half day is pasta in the park with extra Epcot magic hours), and right now we are planning on going Fri. for pasta, Sat to MK, and Monday to HS.

What would you change/ keep? Thanks! :confused3

This will be my first Disney race (I'm doing the 10k), so I can share what I've planned but I don't know if it will work out well or not :rotfl: The day before I plan to go to the expo and then just hang out at DTD, maybe do Disney Quest, and have dinner around 6 before heading back to hopefully get some sleep.

The day of the race we have late breakfast reservations at Chef Mickey's for 11am. I'm hoping I'm not too exhausted for that! Then I plan to nap all afternoon until we go to dinner in Epcot at Via Napoli and stay to watch Illuminations. At least, that's the plan!

You will need to allow at least a half an hour to walk to your corral and you will want to be in your corral at least a half hour before race if not an hour. There is a large "party" area before walk to corral, music tons of people, but once you leave that area he will not be allow to be with you.

For those running/walking without a phone, there are tents with letters on then A,B, etc in the large "party" area and you can plan on meeting your friends and family at a certain tent. WISH'ers can meet at the "w" tent.

If I use an hour of time from the resort to get to the start of the race, that means I need to be leaving around 3:00 a.m. Are the buses going to run at that time?

We stayed at BLT when I did 2012 princess. I would say pass on having him go with you to the start. I'm not sure it's even possible, because it's a 20 minute walk to the corrals I think you had to have a bib to pass thru the gate to get there? Someone correct me if I'm wrong. My husband just came out at the CR viewing spot then took the monorail to see us pass by the poly. What I will tell you is he said it was so insanely busy on the monorail he barely made it to the viewing spot by poly. Barely! Then he went to Epcot for the finish. To do it again, he said he would skip the poly and just do the CR spot and then the finish line. Hope that helps!

When are you doing your last run before the race and how long will it be?

What do you use during a Half to stay hydrated and maintain caloric/blood sugar intake? I am seeing water stations along the way. Do you carry your own drink as well? What about these "beans" or "gummies" I'm seeing people talk about?

I'm telling you...I'm a NEWBIE. Never ran before in my life. Better late than never :)

Not sure where you are staying, but I always stay at value or mods and I try for the 3:30-3:45 am bus. They want us in corrals by 5am ( I think).

As for last run, I'll do 3 runs this coming week approx. 6 miles each and then last run Tuesday, 18th easy 4-5 miles.

I'm sorry I keep posting. I may be asking questions that have already been answered. It is hard to go through the old thread, as well as this thread, with so many pages.

Question: There is a 16 minute per mile time limit. If you are not making a mile in 16 minutes, do they automatically put you on the poop truck? Do they give you a mile(s) to catch up?

Anyone stay at a monorail resort for last years race? I'm at CR and not sure what time I should jump on the monorail to get to the 10k and 1/2 start... Thank you!

Did my last long run today. I did 10. Some people go much farther, but my training was only up to 10. Next week, I'm doing two thirty minute runs and one 4 mile run. I only use water. And I use the beans. If you try fuel, make sure you try it before race day!! I tried a couple of different things before deciding on the beans.

You guys, first let me say I really appreciate you all answering my million questions. I signed up for this race the day it opened up. I did not know about this part of the Disboards until I started researching this week (when I found out my friend backed out on me).

What are you carrying your beans in?

I made a run belt thing. It goes under my clothes and has a zippered pocket. I will have two packs. I will eat one pack at mile 4 and the other at 8.

Thanks so much for this info, I'n going to check this out. I'm starting my taper this weekend, might give it a shot on my 7 miles scheduled for Saturday AM.

Can you believe how close we are to PHM? EEEK! :)

So excited to see the race program! It won't let me open it. I even tried googling it and limiting by date, using quotation marks, and using advanced search. Just won't open more than the first page. :sad1:

Does anyone have a different link/have the ability to upload it to a google doc?

I'd love to see it. :yay:

Not sure what corral you are in….the 16mm pace is based off the last person over the start line. The ballon ladies will follow the last person and you must stay in front of them. So if you are in an earlier corral you will have a bit of a cushion.

If I go by my bib number, I am in corral N.

sooooo if anybody has a husband running with them that doesn't want the 5k shirt, I'd be glad to take it off your hands!!!

I want it so badly!
