Calling all Police Officer's Wives - Inspired by the Fireman's Wives thread

wildernessgirl - I totally agree with you - the police are the first ones people call - for EVERYTHING!!!!!!!. I know that within the 38,000 police officers there are in the NYPD, there are going to be a couple of bad apples, but, 99.9% of them are good, and they don't deserve the treatment that they recieve. One time, when my husband was working a very bad section of brooklyn about 7 years ago, someone in an apartment building threw a can opener at his head. There are other bad stories, but just two weeks ago, my husband found a man that escaped from the hospital, he was mentally impaired, and his wife was so grateful she wanted to hug my husband but told him she was afraid because of all the issues surrounding civilians and law enforcement officers.
As for the donut jokes - it's so overdone, although my husband does love dunkin donuts :goodvibes

kimisabella, there are bad apples in every job, unfortunately our hubbies get the worst of it! Does your husband leave the job at work or does he come home sometimes and can't get his mind off work. Mine comes home some mornings and he can't go to sleep because his mind is going none stop. He really trys not to bring it home, but some of those nights!

This is a really nice thread to read! Glad to see we aren't alone!!

Oh yeah there are days DH comes home and is still all worked up over something that happened. It really does become such a part of THEM. DH just took a Line Supervision class and one of the teachers had been over in Iraq training the police force there. He said that no matter where you go, police officers are all the same, that there is a certain "type" of person attracted to the job. I thought that was interesting.

That is interesting! I really think that it does take a special person to become a police officer. They need "thick skin". I can't believe some of the things he comes home and tells methe things that has been said to him. I know that if someone told me some of those things, I'd have to hurt them!!

Are any of your cities doing anything for the weekend of the May 21st? We have an annual "Tatoo concert" in downtown Cleveland that we go to every year. We have bag pipe groups from all over come to our tatoo. We usually get bands from Chicago, New York, New Jersey, and Canada besides Cleveland's. It make me so proud when we go to it. I cry every time because we ALL are truely ONE BIG FAMILY!!!! It really is a thin blue line!!!

My husband usually doesn't let things bother him, and doesn't think about his work at home. Except when he's got to give a report to his supervisor on the productivity of the police officer's that he directly supervises. If you ever met my husband, you would never think he is a sergeant, he is a complete jokster, not at all the police officer type. I think that it's good that he doesn't take everything soooo seriously because if he did, he would be miserable.

I don't know of anything going on in the city the weekend of the 21st. But, I do live on Long Island, so I'm really not up on all of the things that go on in the city. If there was something big, my husband would know because then they always need extra police to go to wherever there are big crowds.

Hi there everyone! I just had to post our good news here. My DH was a sgt. in our police dept for the past 5 years, BUT as of Jan 1st 2006 he will be promoted to captain!!!! I'm so excited. He has been on nights for the past 9yrs and he will finally be on days. He will also have all holidays off. It will be a change, but We are all thrilled!

Thanks for letting me share our news!

Congrats to you and DH, Julie!!

My DH is the Sgt. of Narcotics here. He has gone from a deputy to a Criminal Investigations Det. to Narcotics. He LOVES it. He usually works from 4ish to 1am ish. He makes his own schedule, which of course is usually at nite! If i'm lucky he has a weekend off here and there. I know that he loves what he does, so i support him 100%.

Thanks for starting this thread!!

That's so great - I know how hard with the holidays! Wow, in the NYPD you have to be a lieutenant before you can be appointed a captain - I guess it's different all over the country. So happy for you guys :goodvibes

DH is a cop as well. He works 3p-11p, 4 on=2 off. His brother is also one, detective in the next town over from the one DH is in.

Kimisabella- both DH and BIL have done the Tour de Force ride with the NYPD guys. DH enjoys the trip with them a lot. We're rural here and he had a picture on his cameraphone of a moose he was escorting down the highway with the moose so close to his cruiser it was like this:

the NYPD guys were like wow, we don't get to do that where we are, LOL. Mind you escorting moose isn't a regular part of his job, but certainly is better than a domestic.

That's too funny!! My dh was promoted to sergeant last november and now works a desk job in the police academy. He's off the streets now which is good for me!! He doesn't run into any crazies on the street now, which is a definate positive. It's a tough job whether your in a rural or urban area!!
