Calling ALL Pin Traders!

I found the pin trading on the cruise to be lacking all the way around. I don't know what I expected, but I really only found trading in the stores (which are hardly ever open).

For anyone who is interested... There is a website I go to regularly that lists and gives pictures of upcoming pin releases. They do it on a monthly basis and show you what pins are being released where and on what day for WDW, Disneyland, Hong Kong DL, and DL Paris, and even the cruise. For those of you traveling this month, you may want to check it out. The site is www.dizpins.com. Enjoy!

We use cork boards to store our pins, if we had pin books we'd have way too many. We have about 1,000 pins we've collected since 11/05. And about 9 framed pin sets as well. We have two very large boards and then a bunch of smaller ones with "collections" on them. We also have a shelf unit I got at Walmart to hold our Jumbos and boxed sets (30+ of those) and I store extra backs, backer cards, etc in those rubbermaid draw things.

We have one pin book and one pin bag with the pages in it for taking pins on the road with us to trade and/or display. I really dislike lanyards as I'm always afraid I'll lose a pin and they get kind of hot in the FL sun.

I'll post pictures soon if anyone is interested.

I'd love to see your collection... I vote YES!!! :-)

I've bought pins for at least 10 years but don't always trade - sometimes I just buy the ones I/DD really like.:goodvibes

Great idea about displaying your pins on cork boards - thanks 2angelsinheaven.:)

Can't wait to get some DCL pins!:cool1:

I though pin trading started in 2000---was it earlier than that?

Yes!! Please do! :thumbsup2

We (my dd6 and I) have been collecting pins for going on 4 yrs now. Starting with her first WDW trip back in 2004, this year will be our fourth trip. We usally only have been getting a few each year, ones that "mean something" to her (i.e. her fav. ride, the hotel we stay at..etc.) But, then as she got older, she started liking to trade with CM's. So, last yr. after careful research here on the DIs i bought her about 10 pins on ebay to trade.. She loved it. It was all her decision. I didn't care if she traded them or not.. it's all for fun for us. I can't wait to pick up our first DCL pin (other than the CClub ones that our inlaws brought back for us).

Me too... ???

Disney pins have been around almost as long as Disney itself, but you are correct.

Pin trading began with Disney's Millennium Celebration which was a collection of 100 pins. The official announcement was made at the Disneyland Resort by Paul Pressler who at the time was the chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.

Were all the original 100 pins numbered on the back? If so, then I have #32 (Touchdown Mickey),#77 (Silver Heart, when you open it up there's one of those changing pictures that changes from Walt as a baby to Walt as an adult), and . . . . #1!!!! I'm so excited I found this one! I'll never ever trade it! It has Mickey on it has a flip feature and you flip the year to show 1999 and 2000. :goodvibes

Actually the pins you mentioned are from the 100 Years of Dreams collection. The first collection was so popular Disney decided to sell another collection that was sold only in Disney Stores.

The 100 Years of Dreams commemorated what would have been Walt's 100th birthday. The pins were sold over a 13 week period from Sept through December in 2001. Every Saturday morning for 13 weeks you had to queue up for that weeks installment which was usually 8 pins. Some weeks we got up at 5:00 AM to be one of the first in line at the local mall. (Yeah, I know, it seemed like a good idea a the time).

BTW...Touchdown Mickey is number 18 not 32.

A couple of side notes:

1. The best database (free to use) for Disney Pins and other pins can be found at www.pinpics.com

2. Since Jan 2002 the Central Jersey Disney Pin Traders have been gathering monthly for pin trading events. Twice a year they put on weekend long pin trading events that brings pin traders from all over the east coast. More information can be found at www.cjdpt.com

I, too, am addicted to the whole pin trading thing! I've found the trading on DCL to be hit or miss at best. On our last cruise I did discover that if you very nicely approach the guest relations desk that they'll peek into the back room and look for officers who are around with lanyards. Best done when there are not too many guests around. ;)

In regards to storing the pins, I use the bag and have inserted cork tiles to cut down on the broken pin situtation. Works like a true dream!!! You can buy the cork tiles at Wal-Mart. For my traders, I bought a small pin bag, wallet size, and cut the cork tiles to fit inside. So, when DD and I trade with a CM, it's fast and easy. "Keep your back" has become a favorite saying of ours. I also have one of the draw string bags as well. Hope the tips help!

YES! Thanks for the tips, I'll be sure to linger around Guest Services to see if they can look in the back:-)
