I a huge Pin collector and I was wondering if the Pin Trading Events every night in the atrium change? Is there a special theme each night? I never did this on my last crusie, and regret it, but would like to know. Do other CMs walking around onboard have pins to trade too? Or can you only trade at the Lobby Events? Anyone know? Thanks :-)

I love pins to and was just today researching the Disney Pins website to put some on my wish list to get while on the cruise! I wish they had one of the Flying Dutchman (since it's at Castaway Cay), but all I could find was a limited edition that came out last December, so it probably isn't there anymore (or is it? . . .)

Anyway, according to the personal navigator from 5/27/07 (which can be found in another thread), there is a Pin Event at 7:30pm in Mickey's Mates, where limited edition pins will be showcased and pin traders can gather! I can't wait!

As for the thing you described in the atrium, I'm not sure . . . but I'll check again on the personal navigator page and see. Be back in a flash!

My 7yo dd recently got into pin trading and I know she'd love this. I'll keep checking this thread for info.

We just got back from the Wonder and there was pin trading each night in the lobby/atrium with a CM from the shop. They have a lanyard as well as a book of pins you may trade from. Many CM's walk about with pin lanyards on as well.

You might be surprised to find many of the LE's released a long time ago still onboard for purchase.

WeatherbySwann, if this is the pin you were looking for:
Pin 52049: DCL - Featured Artist 2007 Collection - The Flying Dutchman at Castaway Cay

It is still available for $25 in Mickey's Mates, or atleast it was last week.

In the words of Beckett "Sorry, that's annoying, my mistake." On the personal navigator, it does indeed say that Pin Trading is held in the atrium at 7:30pm and last for an hour. (I just misread it . . . it was under the subheading "Mickey's Mates", so I assumed it took place at the shop, but it doesn't.) Pin Trading. 7:30. Atrium. Sorry for the misprint!

Also adding, the lobby doesn't really have a theme, but there is one night where you can trade with officers. Instead of just the single CM and book you may see 6 or 7 officers with lanyards too lined up in the lobby and they select two guest traders to wear a lanyard for guests to trade from. If you have any more questions please feel free to ask.

Are the pins sold on a first come, first serve basis? Or do they restock nightly? Also, when you went to the lobby events, were they pretty much the same every night? Like will I be kicking myself if I don't go one night?

Huzzah!!! Yep, that's the one. Yay! Thanks for telling me (another perk to look forward to!).

WOAH, this is so cool! Are the events crowded though? And do they say exactly which night the officers will be there? Do you think I can just ask the CM working there if they know anything, or is it a "secret"?

The 7:30 pin trading "event" at least on our cruise was a CM at a little pin display that had DCL pins you could buy and then a book with ones you could trade out of or with her on the lanyard. Check this book out earlier in the cruise. The CM told us that by the end it fills up with the Castaway Club giveway pins because you can leave duplicates in the book unlike if you trade with a CM with a lanyard. If there are fellow cruisers down there you can always trade with each other.

As far as other CMs trading the ones that always had lanyards on were the gift shop employees and the CMs handing out hand sanitizing wipes at the entrances to the restaurants. My kids had the best experience trading with these CMs. Occasionally the people at Guest Services will have their lanyards on. You get accostomed to spotting those lanyards because sometimes the CMs with them on is random and you'll just bump into one.

There was one night of "crew trading" as was listed in the Navigator (it was the last night on the 4 day). We were all excited thinking the captain or 1st officer may be there, but itwasn't but there were 3 of the "crew" but they didn't really have anything spectacular on their lanyards. Maybe others have had a luckier time with this than we did.

Good luck! I can't believe how addictive it is....

That's a bummer! :( Seems like there should be a way around that.

Thanks for the tips! Yes, I too have become accustomed to spoting the CMs with the lanyards:-) I will definitely make sure I go on the first night! And towards the end of the cruise, I may not go. Thanks for the help! (I agree it is very addictive!!)

I agree it is very addictive!!

I second that!

What kind of storage device do you use to hold your pins? I've tried the book, but when the cover ripped off of it, I tried the bag. The bag definitely preserves the pins better and holds more pins (as well as has room for additional pin appliances, such as lanyards) but it's harder to get the pins in that thing! The book is easier to get pins in-and-out of. I think the book is good when you're actually on Disney trips, but once you get home the bag is the best, though I'm not sure which one to stick to. What about anybody else? Which storage device is the best?!

How many pins do you have?

I use lanyards to store my pins and have one specificaly for trading (with ones I don't want or that I got for free) and have like 3 lanyards. I have been collecting for about 3 years and have only 36 pins, its a start... How about you? I was considering buying the backpack but wasn't sure... Do you remember how much it cost?

PS Have you discovered the locking backs? They are life savers! They come with a metal rod and special backs that lock the pin in place on the lanyard... So no more pins that fall off! Anyway, I'm sure you have seen them, but if not, you MUST buy them! :-)

I'm rummaging through my pins as I type (what memories!) . . . the book I believe is $25 and has 6 pages with space for 20 pins per page, totaling enough space for 120 pins in one book.

The bags are different sizes. I have the larger one and if I recall correctly it was $40 . . . a bit pricey, but worth it if you want to preserve your pins, especially those limited editions. I think the smaller bag was around $20. The bigger bag's pages are double sides, making more room for more pins. It doesn't have designated spaces for each pin, so you have a bit more freedom has to how you arrange your pins. In total, it has four double-sided pages, making for around 140-160 pin spaces. In the back it also has compartments to hold lanyards (I have 75 Years w/Mickey lanyard), lanyard medals (I have sorcerer Mickey lanyard medal), pin backs, and other pin appliances. The bag is also better for storing jumbo pins. Hope this helps!

I used to use permanent backs, but then they started messing up. Whenever I would go to tranfer the pin to a different space on my book or lanyard, when I unlocked the permanent back, the pointy part of the back of the pin would stick to the permanent back, and I'd be left with a ruined pin with no pointy part! So, I eventually stopped using them. They're good if you're sure you want to keep your pin in one spot for ever and ever. I rearrange mine so frequently that I don't think they'd help any, anyways.

I've been collecting for 4 years now and got my first pin starter set (a 75 Years with Mickey set) at the old Disney INformation Center in Ocala, Florida (it's not open any more). I now have (hold on a sec, I have to count) . . . 87 pins (my favorites are my jumbo WDW 35th Anniversary, a light-up Fantastmic, and Cars World Premiere). My favorite places to find pins are at Disney's Pin Traders at Downtown Disney (WDW, not Disneyland--never been to Walt's original resort), and Future World Pin Central at Epcot. There used to be an awesome pin store on the 4th Floor of Contemporary Resort (near Chef Mickey's), but it closed last year. I was so mad!!! I loved that place! Now it's a regular character shop that you see at every resort. Hope I can find some great pins on the cruise!

I saw an advertisement on the Disney pins site about a year ago for regular (not locking) backs, but instead of in the shape of Mickey, they were Goofy, Donald, and Pluto. I loved this idea, but then when I went to WDW a few months later, I didn't see these new backs. Have you heard of them?

WOW! Thanks for all your help, I like all of your tips.. I also love going to the Down town Disney shop, it is so neat and has the best selection! And the tip about the backs, I have not experienced the problems you have, but I definetly be cautious about how often I move the pins around and re-lock them. I think when I go on our cruise in December, I'll shop for supplies then. (I SURE hope they sell the bags and books there...) Anyway, thank you for all your help tonight!
:-) PS I CAN'T WAIT to see Ratatouille!!!!

NO I haven't, some pins I buy are just Mickey shaped backed, others aren't, but I have never seen them selling extras like Goofy, Donald, or Pluto, it's a really cool idea, and I'd love to get them... I wonder why we have never seen them...
