I need help with some ideas for a New York themed party for school, from backgrounds to dress-up and even for party favors. This will be for a high-school aged group. They would love to include some things that are definitively New York, and also things that would be cheap to re-create such as props, backgrounds, etc.

Ideas anyone???

Thanks!

Find a picture of the New York City skyline and have someone artistic draw the outline of the shapes on black posterboards to mount on the walls around the entire room. Butt the posterboards up to one another along the walls. Cover the rest of the walls in black as well to mimic the night.

Play Frank Sinatra. Make it a 40's theme party. Use swing dance music too. Have you seen Blast From the Past with Brendan Frasier? Imagine the 40's club he danced in and shoot for that look.

My daughter's 11th grade prom was done in a 40's NY style. Kids loved it.

Since these are HS'er..what do they like? I can think of a few NY theme parties that would be great.
Revolving around Music:
#1 Cotton Club: every one dress Flapper and dark suits, play jazz/blues music.Lots of history Re: artist that have played at the CC or Harlem.
#2 Age of Progressive Music in NYC: Clubs like CBGC's were stomping grounds for Blondie etc.
#3 Big Band Era: Dinner clubs in NYC like your previous idea from the 40's.

Around Business:
#4 The Apprentice: kids dress for interviews, perhaps there could be some sort of compitition to raise money for a charity.

Around Social
#5 The Hamptons: Glitz and Glam...they are famous for White parties in the summer, where everyone wheres white. Or other beach theme parties.
#6 The Saratogian: Glam and horses. Students could dress like Jockeys, or society men/women. There could be a horse/natural theme.
#7 The Adorandicks(sp): Outdoors theme. Barn plaid check, evergreen trees, black bears, waterfalls etc...

Good luck!

Get little keychains off eBay of:
NY Yankees - there are hats, pennants, trading cards
NY Mets
NY Giants
Enpire State Building
Statue of Liberty

American Museum of Natural History - we have the largest dinosaur exhibit in N. America.

Metropolitan Museum of Art - Egyptian Wing
Lincoln Center - Metropolitan Opera House, NYC Ballet

Chryslar (sp?) Building - pointy art deco spire
"Sleepless in Seattle" & "An Affair to Remember" - meeting on the E. S. Building

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
New Year's Ball dropping at Times Square - have a pic of Dick Clark or a disco ball with the year at the bottom

Broadway Theatres & movie productions
Sex & the City
Taxi Driver

Street vendor carts of foods: have a little hotdog "cart" in the corners, big soft pretzels, knishes if you can find them.:)

Donald Trump & every other building named after him

Thanks so much! My daughter loves your ideas. The hard part is going to be deciding what to do now. I love the part about the street vendor carts. I didn't realize there were so many directions we could go in.....

Don't forget the Hudson River....maybe something with the food at the party, like a cake?

Broadway - you could even incorporate Disney in too - Lion King and Beauty and the Beast

They also serve kebobs - skewers of meat & veggies, honey roasted peanuts, sausage, peppers & onions, baked potatoes with fixings. :flower:

There's that song from the 1946 musical On the Town, "New York, New York, it's a hell of a town, the Bronx is up and the Battery's down..." And there's the musical "42nd St."

Maybe you can set up the room into different "neighborhoods". We have Little Italy, Chinatown, Wall Street & the Stock Market. You can make little fake ticker tape confetti.

Also, we have the U.S. Open tennis Tournament.

And of course the infamous logo, " I  New York.

as favors you could give out roasted Almonds or Cashews in little wax paper bags....When we go to NYC for a weekend trip, it's not complete unitl we have them...( the street vendors sell them)

PS: Everyone here has some great ideas! You are all so creative!
