Calling All Moustached Women!

I'm thirty-nine, but I think you're right about the effects of age and/or hormones. After I had my son, I even started getting coarse hairs growing out of my chin! I blame the boy. ;) Luckily, they're easy to yank out.

I think the difference is that my upper lip hairs are pretty soft. Thick and dark, sure, but still soft. So no stubble.

My chin hairs, on the other hand, feel like cat whiskers. So I guess if you had something like that growing out of your upper lip, you'd probably get stubble!

Yea, mine are not soft and never have been. Laser is the only option at this point.

Well, my first question is did your daughter mention it to you? I'm ready and willing to take my DD to have laser treatments when SHE MENTIONS it. So far she doesn't seem to care. I'm not bringing it up until it bothers HER.

Second, the wive's tale comment is correct. Shaving does not make the hair grow faster, darker, courser.

I can't use chemicals they will easily burn through my skin, waxing peels off the first layer too :headache: so I use the tiny razors. You would be suprised you don't actually have to use them daily. The hair doesn't grow back thicker (at least not the one on your upper lip). For some reason, your leg hair does :rotfl: I would have her use that why torture the child!

I need some advice. I looked over today and DD12 has a mustache. She has fair skin and dark hair. So, it is very noticeable. I have fair skin and hair and haven't had a problem in this area. A little waxing at the hair dresser periodically. So, I'm not sure what to have her do.

My SIL shaves her upper lip with a razor daily and says that the "hair will come in faster/rougher" is a wives tale and not true.

What direction should I lead DD? Wax? Shave? Some other Nair like product?

Help me ladies!

Your SIL is correct-definitely not true. The only women this happens to usually have a hormonal problem. I have never had a mustache but after my 1st child was born, I had a bit of dark hair. I used Jolene bleaching cream.
Also, when I go to the aesthetician to have facials and such, they shave my whole face. My skin is like silk after this.

I used to bleach it with Jolene Creme Bleach, but it smells awful, then I used Nair but if you leave it on too long it will burn your skin so be careful. That was in middle school/early HS but for the last 7 years or so I just dry shave it with a regular razor, and that works better for me. It doesn't grow in faster or darker or anything and its not messy like nair or a creme bleach is

I would suggest one of the battery-operated facial hair / eyebrow trimmers that you can buy just about anywhere (Wal-Mart; Bed, Bath & Beyond). I have one that I use for the occasional mustache and facial fuzz that women of my age have to deal with. They work great.

I use one of these and it does works really well. DD is only 3, but she's very fair & already has dark body hair like me so I see this as an issue we'll have to deal with in the future too. I just hope they keep making these little trimmers because I plan to get her one.

In college, there was a group of us girls who would have a bleach party every few weeks. I guess we felt better bleaching as a group....it was like our own little support group :dance3:

When I used the Jolene, I mixed it strong. The hair actually disappeared! Maybe I killed the roots because it never grew again.:lmao:
I'm not recommending this!!!

I have my eyebrows threaded, and occasionally my upper lip. Not often tho, it stings! lol Threading is much less painful then waxing is (I had waxing done once and my eyelids were swollen & bled for 3 days after!!!! NEVER again!!) and it does last quite a while. I only have to pluck every once in a while, I can go 3-4 months between threading sessions. I also have one of those little battery operated razors that others mentioned, I use it to trim my brows and on the occasional upper lip fuzz, it works great and no, my hair has not grown in thicker. :) So those are my suggestions. :)

I'm a 29 year old hairy Italian! I use Nair hair remover face cream. It's the best! Spread it on, it's just like lotion but you don't rub it in. Wait 5 minutes, then wipe it off with a warm cloth. I usually put lotion on right after so my skin stays moist.

Another vote for the little facial trimmers! I use it for me and my 11 year old daughter. It only cost about $10 and that's a one-time cost. I can't be bothered with making appointments and going somewhere and paying someone. I just go zip-zip... it literally takes two seconds. No pain, no water, nothing. It works like a charm.

I bleach mine....it is only noticable in the winter (It must naturally lighten in the summer with the sun).

My chin finally got so hairy that I started shaving it - the esthetician(sp?) I spoke with said it's yanking the hair by the roots (plucking/waxing) that causes thicker/darker hair because it damages the hair follicle - no idea how accurate that is, just passing it along. Shaving works fine for now, but I'd eventually like to have the laser removal done.

If you have groupon or halfoffdepot in your area they typically offer at least one laser hair removal special per month (usually around $100 for 4 to 5 treatments - WAY cheaper than normal, but the areas covered vary); I haven't jumped on one of these yet because they're all on the other side of town in traffic Hades. I keep hoping a closer deal will come along...

ETA - Sometimes I use hair remover on my chin if I'm also doing my legs and/or bikini area. The very BEST thing I found for this is Gold Magic Powder - you have to mix it with water, so it's a little messy, but it's formulated for African-American men's beards, so it gets the coarser hair better for me. Also, Nair irritates the heck out of my skin, but the Gold Magic doesn't. Just fyi. :-)

I'm blonde but have noticed my 'stache getting thicker as I age:scared1: My dd's are 1/2 Italian but seem to take after my side and aren't very hairy. I'm dying to get laser hair removal for my lip and bikini but it's so expensive. Maybe this year..a bikini wax is so expensive $50+tip so it adds up.

Sally Hansen creme hair remover for the face. It's a creme that you let dry and wipe of with a warm damp wash cloth it doesn't hurt at all and removes everything. I couldn't imagine putting hot wax on my face. Ouch!

I also use something like this its "Proffesional Surgi Cream" from Sallys beauty Supply. Works great, just dont leave on too long.

Haven't ride the entire thread, but highly discourage bleaching. I used to do that when I was around 13 and it bleaches the skin too. So, when I would tan my upper lips would stay lighter. :scared1:

I say wax or tweeze.

If she waxes it, or goes and has it done, then she can just tweeze the hairs out with tweezers as them come back in. Not all hairs will come in as noticeable and she can just pluck the thicker hairs and leave the peach fuzz. I mean everyone has facial hair.

I agree. I am very pale and the bleaching of my skin was even visible...so then I started using Nair on my upper lip and chin (I have PCOS so this is very, very common for us gals), but it made me bleed...did electrolysis for years but it wasn't permanent because of the PCOS. Then I switched to waxing, which I supplemented with one of those 'smooth away' things which I still use to touch up from time to time (this could be a good option for a child, painless and works pretty well, just apply lotion afterwards), and finally, a year ago, got a prescription for Vaniqa which I am not kidding, has changed my life. I now use it twice a day and get my upper lip and chin waxed every 6-8 weeks instead of the 2-3 weeks it would have been necessary before (I could never afford to get it done that often though).

It took about a month and a half to have it start working and now, a year later, I think it gets better every month. My aesthetician has noticed how much easier the waxing is each time, and my confidence has just increased so much. Used to be I wouldn't wear my hair back in a pony tail because of the hair along my chin line/side burn area but this has made it so much better...I just feel free. And, as a teacher, feel so much more comfortable. Kids can be cruel and I had plenty of comments about my "moustache" as a kid and a teen and it was horrible...I've always lived in fear that a child in one of my classes would say something about this. I don't have to worry anymore. To someone who has never dealt with this it won't seem like a very big deal, but after dealing with this since I was 10 or 11, it is a huge thing. It's not cheap, but I will cut in other ways...and the tubes that they say last 1 month, I am able to stretch to about 2 or 2 1/2 months which helps.

Depends what category you are in. We are in the shave it camp and need laser hair eventually. Buy a man's electric shaver.:thumbsup2

My poor 19yodd needs mega laser lair removal on many parts of her body. We are hoping to start that process beginning this summer. I am going to get lasered as well and be done with it.

Waxing, bleaching and all that do not work because you would have to wax once a week. I waxed for a long time and when I had to do it daily, I realized that it was not the way to go.

So it really depends on genetics.

Don't know if you've tried laser hair removal before, but I wouldn't suggest starting it during the summer. You have to stay out of the sun for a couple weeks after each treatment. Sun exposure after treatment can cause skin discoloration. Also the more of a contrast of your skin color to hair color the better your results (ie lighter skin, darker hair). Each treatment is 4-5 weeks apart. So that would mean no sun exposure for the entire summer if you start in the beginning of the summer. I would start 4 weeks after the last of your summer outdoor activities. Or start it now & take a break during the summer. My dermatologist did it during the winter & went on a skiing trip. Next thing she knew, she had little white round circles of discoloration on her face where she had the treatment done.

Also know that most advertise it as painless & I'd say that's a bit of a stretch. It's uncomfortable, but as soon as the laser stops there is zero discomfort. To me it kinda feels like two match heads pinching your skin. Many say like a hot rubber-band snap. Take ibuprofen an hour before treatment & you'll really be good. If you're thinking about doing the face know that facial hair removal uses a different laser that is more uncomfortable than the one they use for the body. I'd start with the body & then move on to the face. :thumbsup2

This italian girl loves laser hair removal! Worth every penny! :worship:

I've been shaving mine for about 7 years? It's cheap and easy and it looks the same as it did when I used to wax.
