Hello to all of you marching band parents & students.

DD is a colorguard member in the marching band. I am amazed at how good their show is looking already this year. I am truly impressed and think it is going to be a wonderful show.:thumbsup2 The title of their show is "RINGS".

DD and I were just curious what the name of some of your shows are this year and if you are as excited as we are to be starting a new season.

Heres to a new and exciting marching band season!

Best wishes to you and your daughter! Some of my favorite memories are of my sons marching in band. I even chaperoned a few trips to DC and WDW.

Now I spend my summers attending DCI events. If your daughter is interested in persuing guard, have her check into www.dci.org

Proud band mom here (and former band member)!! Oldest son marched tuba all four years and now our youngest is starting his freshman year marching baritone at Central Crossing. Our show is titled "Into The Light" and is looking really promising. The first Bands of America regional they will be performing at is the Youngstown OH one in October. The dedication and talent these high school kids have still amazes me. Good luck to all the students out there, and have fun!

My son is a HS senior in marching band this year plus he plays football. Tonight we were losing so when they are down at halftime my son doesn't get to play . Kind of a bummer. He plays drums.

My son is a senior this year and has been with the band since 6th grade. He plays the trumpet. This year the high school is doing music from the Doors. Band camp was last week so we got to see their show last night. Looked good!

Marching band person here. I did marching band for all 4 years in HS (played the clarinet) and now I assist with the colorguard. This year we're doing a POTC theme.

My 2 were in high school marching band and are now in college and play in The Mighty Sound of Maryland Marching Band at the University of Maryland. DD is a senior and plays clarinet and DS is a sophomore and plays trumpet. They do a different show at every home game so learn 6 shows each year. They moved back to school last Sunday and have been marching early week this week. I can't wait to go to the first home game next Saturday to see them march.

My son is a junior and plays snare drum, actually this is his second year as drum captain. My daughter played flute and graduated in 05. So I've been doing the band mom gig for seven years now, one more year to go. I fit uniforms, do alterations, run a concession stand, you name it! But I love it and I will miss it when it's over.

Their show this year has no title.:confused3 Each movement pertains to the heavens and skies but it sadly has no name. Oh well...

Our DS15 is going to be a sophomore and is in his second year of marching band. Their show is titled "Move or Be Moved". They are playing the music from Cirque's "O". It is fun, funky music. Their show is really fast paced with a lot of movement. They have been practicing since early July and their first 'performance" is Thursday at the first football game of the year. Their first competition is the second weekend in July.

Any other bands here going to the BOA super regional in St. Louis this year? This will be our 3rd year going--it is a blast!

I just joined my school's marching band a little over a week ago. (I'm a freshman.) I also play clarinet. Our progress already has been beyond the expectations of my band directors. This year, our show is King Kong.

Hi there!!!:cheer2:

My dd is a JR and plays the Alto Sax. I don't know what her theme is yet because she missed band camp due to surgery.

School starts tomorrow!!!

What a great thread!

My son is a junior trumpet player. He's actually Brass Lieutenant this year, so that's kind of cool. He LIVES for marching band, just loves it, already planning to be a member of the UGA Redcoat Marching Band in a couple years.

Their show this year is called Come Sail Away. I'm thrilled because they're playing Under the Sea! They're also playing Victory at Sea, Sailor's Hornpipe, Anchors Aweigh, The Navy Hymn (Eternal Father, Strong to Save) and Russian Sailor's Dance. And some snippets from Gilligan's Island (my son's solo!), Jaws, Yellow Submarine, Popeye and Come Sail Away from Styxx.

We saw the preview show a few weeks ago at the end of band camp and it was already wonderful, really, really good. They're first game is this Friday (away, unfortunately) and he's soooo excited. The first time wearing their brand-new uniforms (old ones were 20+ years old:scared: )! Can't WAIT! :cool1:

Our younger son is in his seventh grade, his second year of playing alto sax. He's already looking forward to marching band in 2 years. And our second grade daughter can't wait to get into it either (right now, she's thinking trumpet or flute). So we'll be band parents for 8 years straight, then a 1 year gap and then another 4 years. So count us in as Marching Band Parents/Students for a long time to come. Oh, yeah, and way back when DH and I were both marching band kids also. He was (still is!) a drummer and I played flute.

Go Band! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Marching band mom here! DD is an eighth grader who playes snare drum in her high school marching band. (we have a small high school and 8th graders are allowed to participate in marching band)
She loves loves loves marching band!!!!! :cool1:

Last night was their first show. For pre-game, they played Fox's NFL theme song. It sounded really awesome. (did I mention they are an all brass band?)

For half-time, they played Gonna Fly now (theme song from Rocky), One way or Another by Blondie and Pump It by the Black Eyed Peas.
They only have one week of band camp and it's only 2 hours a day. Their band director is AWESOME. What she can do with these kids in such a short amount of time is amazing!!!!!!!

They will use this show for the next two weeks because they are both away games. Then they will learn a new show for the next home game.

She likes to keep it interesting for the kids - and the fans!:yay:

DD and I are loving all of your responses. It is really fun to read how excited all of the kids are getting started in the new season.

DD is a sophomore and they had their first football game this past Friday. They did their opener and closer and it is really looking good. Prior to her becoming part of this wonderful orginization, I had never been a part of anything like this. I never realized how hard all of these kids work. They put tons of hours into all of this yet they have fun while doing it. I have so much appreciation for all marching band and color/winter guard students (also all of the other band ensembles). And what an amazing group of parents!!

2 hours?! :faint:
I've spent 45 hours with the band this past week. (Yes, nine hours a day!)
We've been practicing some of our songs that we're going to play in the stands (mainly fight songs and our school song). The songs we play that fit into the King Kong theme are King Kong Opener (snippets of It's Deserted, Tooth and Claw, and Beauty Killed the Beast II), Beautiful, and King Kong Finale (snippets of Kong Chases Jack, and Captured). The opener is very intense, and very fast. Beautiful, on the otherhand is a slow, short song.

I love the theme.

Our first game is sometime in the beginning of September. Either the 7th, or 14th. I can't remember.

My son is a soph. and second year bass drum. This years show is Jesus Christ Superstar.

Well, she's been at it for about 35 years or so and she has this thing down to a SCIENCE!!!
The kids are awesome, love band and work very hard. She keeps the shows pretty simple, but they still look and sound amazing!
Band camp has dwindled in time spent since I was in HS because so many kids are doing multiple sports and activities.
She'd lose so many kids to sports if she demanded more of their time (we have a VERY competitive volleyball program)

Also, some of the music was used in the 4th of July parade and a performance at Cedar Point. So they already knew some of the music.

They re-use old favorites in the stands. So only the new kids need to learn those. Sweet Child of mine and Hang on Sloopy are favorites around here.

Good luck on your first show!

Another band mom here...

DS is a sophomore and been marching with the high school band since 7th grade...plays trombone. It's a small school so only one marching band. Since DS has been involved with band we've seen the program grow even though the number of kids stays about the same. We've added another field show each year and finally got the poms and dance teams to be a part of the show last year so on the field we look bigger.

This year's show is "The Music of Chuck Mangione"...hope I spelled the last name correctly. We've seen them at the end of band camp show and they sounded pretty darn good considering we lost a lot of musicians to graduation last year and the new kids looks so tiny in comparison. They did their first parade Friday night and got second. The school that beat them has about 3 times the number of musicians because that school requires a fine art so about 1/3 of the entire school takes band.

The neat thing about the band this year is they are taking their band trip during the school year...usually do it at the end...but they are going to be marching in WDW druing our spring break. I think I'm more excited about it than DS. lol DS is disappointed because the band boosters and the powers that plan have them staying off property while at WDW and actually only have allowed 3 full days (including marching time) there. The planners scheduled a day in Savanah, GA so the kids could see the Atlantic. (Yes, this obsessive compulsive Disney planner is rolling her eyes.) I told DS that it really isn't going to matter if they are sleeping 6 to a room in a Motel 6 because he's gonna be with his friends and have a great time! He shrugged at me, but I saw the hint of a smile creeping on his face.

golfgal...I know the show you're talking about in St. Louis. It is a big one! DS's school doesn't compete there, but the band from my alma mater high school does...Crimson Express. It'll be interesting to watch that band this year since there have been some changes. The director left for a position in Las Vegas and the junior high director was moved to the high school to take over. This guy is the one who arranged the music for the band's programs and had been assisting with the Crimson Express for several years.

Best Wishes to all our band kids! Hope they have a wonderful season full of great memories!

Band mom here...my DD is a freshan & in her 2nd year of HS marching band. Their show this year is titled "Heroes Fallen, But Not Forgotten". It's very patriotic & the kids did a wonderful show at the first football game last Friday night.
