Is it a big deal if you break a crown? Or just something you live with? I just broke a little piece off of the corner and I can feel the cement bond with my tongue, but I don't have any pain. Should I go to a dentist or just let it be?

Yow!

Not a crown expert--but I do have one..and if it broke, I'd go in. I had a filling break apart when I was young--so the thought of any breach in a tooth, crown or otherwise would give me the heebie jeebies.

I saw some stuff at walgreens that could be used to fill in a filling..not sure if it could be used on a crown.

Hi, Dental Hygienist here.

It really depends on what kind of crown it is. If it is a PFM crown (porcelain fused to metal) and you broke a piece of the porcelain off....you should be fine until your next cleaning appt. (assuming you go every 6 months), because there is metal under the porcelain that will protect the tooth.

If it is an all porcelain crown......I would have the dentist take a look at it immediately, you don't want decay setting in around or under the crown.

This is why we recommend gold or platinum crowns on the back molars....they don't break!!!!! :teeth:

I don't think it's fused to metal...I'll have to give a call. Thanks for the info. Do you know if they will have to replace the whole crown or can they just fix it somehow?

If it is an all porcelain crown it will probably have to be totally redone because once it cracks it compromises the whole crown.

I'd go back into the dentist. Course my dentist has a lifetime guarrenty on the ones he does.
