Hey everyone! I was wondering if you could help me out... I was looking to do a sort of "top 10" post for my blog, Abby in Wonderland, of things to know before you go on the CP.

BUT I obviously haven't been there yet. So I'm seeking advice from those in the know! What should we future CMs and CP hopefuls know before heading down to work in Disney?

Thanks! :goodvibes

Well Queen, I'm not sure if I can come up with ten things that you NEED to know before you go, but I'll try!

1. The weather is beautiful, but just in case you've never been, it can get quite cold, so be prepared for that!

2. Make sure you have the whole "Disney Look" thing down before you get there; it makes things much smoother for you and everyone.

3. Make sure you go to the pool parties and other great events there. For example, there are times where they have a special cast member party thing after hours and you can ride the attractions like space mountain with the lights on. These things are likely a once in a lifetime opportunity for most people, not to mention that they are a great way to meet new friends and relax!

4. If you have to ride the bus, pay close attention to the schedules as sometimes they will change while you are there. Also, be sure to catch an earlier bus so that you can get to work on time. Even if you are an hour or so early you can still hang out in the park as a guest until it's time to get suited up!

5. If you like shopping and you will be there during the fall and winter, try to hold off on buying much merchandise until you get your holiday discount card. There is also a merchandise liquidation sale that goes on in the winter in the Epcot parking lot called the Winter SALSA (Spend A Little, Save A lot) sale . Go to it and do it asap, there is always a line and you may have to wait an hour to get into the giant tent, but it's well worth it. They have everything from clothes to posters to shoes to luggage, and it's not just Disney stuff, it's merchandise that they sell all around the resorts and parks.

6. Most importantly, have fun and enjoy what will be a time in your life which you will never forget!

Hope that helps, Queen! Have a nice day :D

To add on to this above posting about the chilly weather, I would suggest packing a sweatshirt or two (maybe even one moderately warm jacket) and some long sleeve shirts or any combination of those few items. It can get in the 40s at night in the winter and it can hover around 50 in November/December!

As a Floridian, I totally agree on the weather. This year has been crazy. Last summer was silly hot, we hit 100 often down my way which isn't the norm and we've been really on the cold side (Orlando is about 200 miles northwest of me, so it's colder there than here.). Tonight we're supposed to be in the mid-50's over night, high tomorrow of 61 with lotsa wind and low down into the mid-40's tomorrow night)

Going along with the cold weather thing, prepare for rain too. It will POUR. Bring rainboots, an umbrella, and a rain jacket. You don't want to let it cut into your time. And rainy days are prime for playing in the parks.

Network - Whether this means attending a meeting put on by the CP specifically FOR networking, or simply establishing and maintaining good relationships with your managers. I am still really close to my superiors, and not only did it make my job a lot easier, but hopefully it will benefit me in the near future, trying to go back this Fall.

Make lots of friends - This may sound dumb of me to say, but really what I mean is... be open. Don't hold yourself back or sit in your room all the time. Develop relationships with your fellow Cast Members - my best friends were my coworkers. Once again, not only does this give you a social life, but it makes working much more pleasurable. Just remember, almost everyone is in the same position: A new environment, doing new things, where they don't know ANYONE. It's so much easier when we're all in the same boat.

Take advantage of all the CP has to offer. Reinhart went over this already. But aside from just Housing events and stuff, I think part of the reason my program was so great was because I was ALWAYS busy. I always found something to do and someone to do it with me. If I wasn't playing in the parks, I was using my CM dining discount at one of the expensive restaurants (the holiday pack mentioned gives you 30, 40, and 50% off). Just always remember, you are LIVING in Disney World. If you ever need a reality check, just come to these boards and see how far in advance families go to plan just a one-WEEK vacation... and you're there for a SEMESTER. Crazy.

Be financially wise - Don't hold back from doing things that are awesome. Eat out on Disney property a LOT. But if you really want to make money, just watch what you spend it on. Disney says most people break even, but that's only because they don't save up at all, and go ahead and just spend their money paycheck to paycheck. However, my roommate was trying to save up for her apartment when she got home, and she came back with $6,000. She was only there August-December. So even though you'll be making minimum wage, you can REALLY make bank too, if you try even a little bit.

If you're under 21, just don't risk it with alcohol. One of my close friends extended his program through Spring and just got terminated a few weeks ago for this. It's the #1 reason for CP termination, so be very careful.

Security can be pretty hardcore - just in advance, let me tell you to never hang a towel out to dry over your balcony. Never put a pair of shoes outside to dry. Never leave your door cracked open if you're just running out to the car for a second. They will GET you. haha. I guess it's to prevent liability for what could get stolen. So, just to avoid getting yourself a warning, or 2, like we did - go ahead and steer clear from doing those things.

Go on the Hub on a regular basis... make it a daily activity. There are so many cool thngs on there and opportunities to sign up for CM-only tours. But they fill up REALLY fast. Behind-the-scenes of rides like Haunted Mansion, Tower of Terror, and Great Movie Ride went on while I was there. But I didn't even hear about them until they were full, so I'd make it a point to check frequently if that sounds like something that might interest you.

Go to Epcot at least two or three times during the Food and Wine Festival. Waste some money here. It's worth it. Falafel from Morocco and Souvlaki from Greece = delicious. And if you ARE 21 or over, have at it!

If you don't work at Magic Kingdom, it's worth it to pay for a discount ticket to one of the Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Parties. I was a Custodian there, so I literally was able to experience every single aspect of the party without ever coming as a guest. But if you're not able to do that, it would be worth it. You get a crazy amount of candy. I loved the "dance parties" at Ariel's Grotto in Fantasyland and the old Stitch Stage in Tomorrowland - always hit those up on the job and oftentimes got Great Service Fanatic cards for it! The Boo to You Parade is my FAVORITE of all time as well, and Hallowishes is also something exciting to see. Loved it.

And lastly for now, if you're a Disney freak like me and think there are SO many things you are going to want to do, make a list - My next CP, whenever that may be, I fully intend on making a list of things I want to do that I didn't do last year. It sounds a little awkward, but I think it will be a lot of help. Even random things like, "Step foot inside every Disney resort at least once, just to see what it looks like in person," or "Go see Cirque du Soleil." You'd be surprised how hectic your life will get once you finish training and start working.

I second all of these things for sure, it definitely does pour and you just gotta be ready for it, it can go on forever...

As for making friends, this is so important, and it's actually very easy! Just like IPC said, most people there don't know anybody, it's like you're back in kindergarten or something, there are so many people to make new friends with! Don't be afraid to burst your shy bubble if you have one; you won't regret it. :)

Finally, I too wanted to go on those tours but I either a) found out too late or b) I had a work conflict. Make sure you can go to some of these! Again, some of these things are probably once in a lifetime opportunities, who knows if you'll get another chance...

By the way, IPC, you are yet another Custodian I'm jealous of. I mean, where's my face paint? :confused3 :sad1: You guys and your Magic Kingdom! Epcot needs to get in on this face-painting business!!! :teacher: Disney withdrawl...must...go...back...:scratchin :bitelip: :hyper:

1.) If you're driving, bring a GPS!

2.) Try Dole Whip!

3.) Take advantage of the parks. We have the ability to go to the parks, stay for only an hour, and go "Oh, I'm tired, let's go" but that hour can still be worth it. And we don't lose a penny!

4.) Eating out is always good and must for the Disney experience, but when you're eating at work get stuff from the store to take for lunch/dinners at work. You can save SO much money this way, and it'll save you a lot of time on your break! Otherwise, just be careful with your spending. Cooking dinner at home every now and then is fun too- just be mindful of the fire alarms!

5.) Know that it's a job. You might not get the best job ever, but it's what they essentially brought you here to do. Yes, you will have to stand up all day. Yes, you do work all day until you get a break. Yes, they might ask you to extend an hour or two when they need to you. Yes, these are all things I've heard people whine about like they didn't know they were coming here to work. Just keep in mind that working here can have as many pros or cons as any other job.

6.) Learn to have fun with your job. Talk to the guest and ask them about their day. Even just a "Hi, how are you?" or "Are you having fun?" can put a smile on their faces. Don't just stand there all day complaining about how you have the most boring job ever or that you just want to go home- talk to people because everyone has such great stories!

7.) Especially if you're working in a shop that's at a ride exit, talk to the people waiting for their friends and family to come off the ride. It's tons of fun!

2.) Try Dole Whip!

This!!!! Omg, I swear that's the best fruit treat I've ever had. It's at MK, just walk past the Crystal Palace (which is also amazing), over the bridge and it's next to Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse. Not sure if it's anywhere else, that's the only place I ever found it at and I checked all over the place. But then again this was a couple years ago.

They have them at the Poly too. My fiance loves them. Me, I'm allergic to pineapple so none for me

Yep! There's a little machine in the cafeteria type place there... my plan for day 2 of the CP (when you still can't get into the parks) is to get a dole whip there and watch Wishes from the beach! So excited! :goodvibes

Subscribing to this - these ideas are great! Thanks you guys. :)

And I didn't know about leaving shoes outside and stuff, so that's good to know...

All this is great stuff!

also don't forget business attire and shoes to go with them, my roommate forgot to being shoes other then sneakers and had to barrow mine, so just make sure that stuff is on your list to bring at least one pair of like business pants a few tops and shoes as you will need them the first few days you are there and if you are taking classes.

Deff do Not So Scary if you don't work it, its soooo much fun! and make lots of friends from all over the place its like camp when you are a kid you kind of get to learn about all over the world and have great friends that you share the memoery of the time with, I have friends from Canada, all over the UK and all over the USA. Its wonderful.

And don't be afriad to ask people questions sometimes I see CPs wondering around at first deer in headlights look who just seem worried about asking for help, don't be most people don't bite and once you learn you'll beable to help the next group :)

and comfortable shoes are your friend!
