Calling all Canadians......cell phone use??

Does anyone have experience with a plan from Koodoo? I am going down to Disneyland as well at the end of the month (Seems there will be lots of Canadians from this board at that time! :) ) and trying to figure out the best plan additions for the trip. I usually keep my phone off at all times, but I dont have that option this trip. And I would love to know wait times!

Help!!! We have 2 iphones both with Telus.

We want to use them in DL to check wait times (I have touring plans and the other wait app that escapes me right now...:confused:duh) and to text as we are planning on splitting up with the kids as they sometimes have different things they want to do....ie no super scary stuff for DS. I was also hoping to take some pics to send to my folks with my phone so I don't have to wait till I get home to unload the memory cards.

We got an e-mail from Telus for some US roaming deal they have....$10 gets you 1MG of data, another $10 gets reduced calling for $0.50 a minute and yet another $10 get you reduced text rates of $0.30 per text. Yay...some deal!!! lol

We very most likely won't use the phones to call. Texting, yes but we will have to adjust and not send the one worders back and forth.....and have to drop the habit of sending "k" to sign off! That could get spendy!!

As for the data.....how much data will 1MG cover me? Will it be enough for the apps and perhaps e-mail? Could we get around the texting with instant e-mail? Is there wifi in DL?? I am lost!!!! :headache:

Anyone have any advice or experiences that could help me? I'd be forever grateful! :worship:

We have been on several road trips through the US and down to Disneyland (3 in the last year alone) with my iphone. this is the Telus page that expains the "passes" http://www.telusmobility.com/en/BC/US/TELUS-US-roaming-passes-4G.shtml
personally I always get the $40.unlimited texting which included picture messages (mms) then you can carry on as usual with that part.
I get a $20. pass for calling, so it works out to 25 cents a minute, I use it only when I have to.
There is only a $10 data pass which drops the price from $5. per MB :scared1: down to $1. per MB. I only get it so I can use it to access googlemaps if we get lost, do quick searches for hotels if we don't have one booked, check my bank account because I don't do that when I am using wifi in the hotels or mcdonalds or where ever. I use it very little use the wifi in hotels etc for stuff like facebook, email etc. even at that, during our last 3 week road trip my data usage cost me $115. on top of the cost for the pass. I make sure to turn off data roaming, and only turn it on to use it because I have apps that like to access the internet, even the itunes app store checks to see if you have updates available for your apps without you asking it to.
so short answer is no, there is no way to be able to use the apps to check wait times etc. there without incurring a BIG bill.
My long distance roaming charge was only $12 for the whole time on top of the cost of the pass, I did use it a few times to call home, phone ahead to hotels to book them or check on a reservation etc.
The really need to do something about the extreme cost of Data!!!
Our daughter added the same passes to her phone, and phoned home every day, sometimes more than once talking a long time each time. She would make the effort to use the hotel phone to access the 1-800-646-0000 telus number to link into our house phone so she was using our long distance plan which is only 4 cents a minute to and from the US. her long distance roaming was $65. on top of her pass
Now about unlocking your phone.... I would really talk to someone at Telus about doing that. I will look into it for next trip, but my contract is up next month and I'm getting the new iphone 5 and I would never do anything to it to jeaporadise my warranty or anything like that. hope that all helps! :)

10MB isn't much data, it's 10 large photos (like from a 4S or Galaxy), or a few hundred emails, as long as there is no spam with images (and you don't email images). Most apps use minimal data as long as video, audio, or photos are not involved.

Rule of thumb is that photos are 100x larger than text like emails. Audio is 10-100x larger again ... and video is 10-100x larger again.

Most hotels have free wifi, but DL does not yet. Some restaurants have free wifi in the area too (though I don't know about the DCA Starbucks).

We put our phones in airplane mode in the parks, even though we buy a similar package from Rogers here in BC. This year I was hoping that a more reasonable plan was available ... but so far no luck.

I read on another thread that the 3 DLR hotels do have free Wifi.

I was hoping they did, thank you for confirming it. We'll be staying at the DLH in the Fall!

It's so nice there! we were just there end of July again. The wifi even works out by the pools, and it is faster than most of the other hotel wifi's I've used. When you are in the park, you can go into Grand Californian to check your apps for wait times and stuff like that, but I can never be bothered to do that. Have a great holiday!

Stayed at the DLH in Feb. The WiFi was barely adequate for email, and I was unable to stream radio or Netflix on my iPhone, even in the lobby.
