Attn all business majors and graduates:
I debating whether it is a good or bad idea to take both Business Statistics and Financial Accounting (the first one) in the same semester. I've asked a few of my friends and I'm getting mixed reviews. Any suggestions? I am totally 17hours if I take both of them (4hrs. each + other classes) thnx!

Aaaaaaaaaauuuuugghh! Two maths at one time? You're scaring me! I just recently thought of switching to business. First I have to get through Algebra! :( Good luck!!

I'm not a business major anymore... but those courses don't sound too bad actually.

Accounting is pretty straightforward, and Statistics was in my case a truly rough course.

Two maths in one semester can be challenging. If you truly have the aptitude for it, and can handle the homework for both classes I would say try it.

Is that all you have to do for your major? I am thankfully done with undergrad math right now, so I am doing the no more math happy dance.

Let me see if I remember. Statistics was a little rough, not as bad as Finance to me. Are Finance and Financial Accounting the same thing now? Not sure, but I took Finance in the summer, and it was tough along with my other class of Computer Info Systems. Taking 17 hours is a pretty heavy load. Do you have a student advisor or just a faculty advisor? Peers can usually be a good source of info. Good luck with your decisions.

Financial accounting is usually the first, basic accounting course. It is a totally different kind of class than stats will be. Financial accounting is stuff like balancing t-accounts, writing journal entries, etc. I didn't think it was too bad a class, but I was a finance major, and I liked stats too, so maybe I'm not a representative sample ;)

Stats will have alot of math in it, but financial accounting won't really have all that much. There are fomulas and methods to memorize, but most of the actual math will be add/subtract/multiply/divide type stuff.

Good luck! And good choice to be a bus major- my b-school had t-shirts that said, "No matter what your major, you'll end up in business."

The material of the first Financial Accounting class isn't that difficult. However many schools use that class as a means of discouraging a good number of people into switching their majors away from accounting. ie, it's a traditional "flunk out" class. But like I said, the material isn't so much hard as it is copious. There is usually alot of homework and alot of memorization. If you had High School Accounting, some of it will be review which is helpful.

Also depending on your school, it can also can be taught by Grad Students which can be a real crap shoot.

Statistics gives me nightmares to this day. :) But you are going to have to take it eventually so you might as well get it over with -right?

17 hours isn't too terrible. I usually took 18 - 20 and worked a part time job. If you time manage well, I think you can handle the load just fine.

I would probably say not to take them at the same time. I did very well in Accounting I, but many in my class did not. I got a B in Business Statistics, but it was very difficult for me. Both courses involved a lot of "homework," so you should probably consider how much time you would have to do the assignments as well. The key to each course was definitely doing the required work for me. :)

This is what I would base it on:

1) Are you going to work that semester?
2) What school are you at in Austin? ACC, UT, St. Edwards, etc.?
3) How many hours are you USED to taking?
4) Who are your profs most likely to be? www.pickaprof.com this is a GREAT site, (check to see if your school participates) you can see what type grades past students have gotten/drop rate/prof reviews
5) Do you have outside class distractions? ie: frat? I know that they take a lot of time to be in
6) What are your other classes going to be like?

Hey! Finance and Financial Accounting are different. Financial Accounting is the name of the course here for, I guess, Accounting I w/ a ACCT Lab.

Well, to answer your questions :):
1) No, no work at all. thank you mommy and daddy for paying for my life. :)
2) Attending UT - Austin (Business Honors)
3) 12-15 hours
4) expecting a pretty challenging professor but very helpful TA's (so i've heard)
5) Outside class distraction: Girlfriend and video games
6) MicroEconomics, and two required cultural classes (photography and some American Experience class).

thnx!

Sorry! I told you I might not remember right. Business classes are a lot different and called a lot of different names than in the 70's. Accounting I is really a very basic class then. There was a lot of homework though.

I would take the two classes then.

The worst that is going to happen is that you are going to drop 1. And you may get in there and realize that they aren't that hard after all.

I'd like to know how you do that. Yesterday I was talking with a lady in my Physics class. She's taking 15 credits, works 2 part-time jobs, married with dog :), manages property, competes in AND teaches judo! How do people do it????

That's because they are not normal!

I'm with you! They must run on pure espresso or something! I couldn't do it! :hyper:

wow, is she from NYC?
I don't think I could do all of that but my parents really help me out with my financial situation cuz they want me to put all of my worries and attention on school. which i am greatly appreciative of. With the whole finance stuff outta the way for now, school is relatively easy compared to some of my friends who have to work and study at the same time. I don't complain at all, no matter how much boring and frustrating studying i have to complete :). thank you mama and baba.
