called by last name

Nope. Incidentally, DW's best friend probably calls her by her last name WAY more than by her first :)

My DH has been in the military for 13 years. Most people call him by his last name and when he talks about his coworkers at home, it's all by last name. The ones I'm familiar with I'll use their first name when out in public, but it's really not uncommon to be at a bar and say "Hey Lastname!"

A former supervisor called all subordinates by their last names, even to our faces. Didn't bother me a bit.

I supervise two Daves. To their faces I address them as Dave, but to others I refer to them by their last names to avoid confusion.

I work mostly with men and one of them is my husband. I am called Mrs. Ourlastname. I find it charming and shows a lot of respect.

Most of the guys have figured out that if I call them Mr. Theirlastname, we're good. If I call them just Theirlastname, they better think about what they did wrong. :rolleyes1

I just be happy at least they tried get my first and last name right. I have weird first and last name. Lord trying spell it is a problem too. LOL

This happens when there are multiple people with the same first name. We (my place of employment) has a habit of hiring multiple people with the same first name for the same department. They usually end up being Smith, Jones instead of Doug.

When I worked on staff in hospitals, everyone was called by their last name. Not sure that's done any more.

Wouldn't even hit my radar.
I'm a nurse. I've been called WAY worse things than my last name. ;)

It wouldn't bother me. I have heard it quite a bit actually. It seems as if where I work (in a school), it varies from person to person. Some are sticklers for the "Mrs. or Mr.", but a lot of people are called by some nickname that is a derivative of their last name. Others are just known by their last name.

I am called by my first name. A very few people use the first syllable of my name, and only because I let them (my brother, for one). Anyone else, full first name please.

Our last name lends itself to nicknames, and I call ds by his nickname, on the field and off. His friends think it's funny that I use his nickname. :rotfl:

When your name is Mike, Dave, Steve, Dan.... you tend to get called by your last name because there's usually 7 or 8 of you using that first name.

This is so my office!! We have 5 Mikes. Years ago I started addressing them and referring to them by their full names (Mike Smith, Mike Jones, etc.) One of them would always greet me back with my full name as well "Hello jane Doe". The system stuck and now we generally all use each other's full names - "Good morning Bill Peterson" "How are you, Cathy Taylor?" It's actually quite endearing! :goodvibes

Nah. I played sports so it was just easier most of the time. I don't think many people have done it since I've been married, but when they do it still doesn't bother me at all. There are worse things to be called! My first name isn't the easiest but my last name is just one syllable lol. I get it.

The only time it's annoying is during Christmas. People still call the men in my family by their last name, so someone will say it and everyone looks.

People don't really call me by my last name but it would not offend me if they did. At work I call some people by their first name but I call a lot by their last name. I work with a Sheriff's Dept so it's common to call a deputy by their last name.

My late DF used to say "you can call me anything, just don't call me late for dinner!". :lmao:

Our last name is also considered a first name. (If you are that interested in it, look up the family that founded Seattle.)

DH is typically called by his last name at work.

I'm a teacher. For years, this was never an issue. Early in my career, kids would occasionally refer to me by my first name, and I always put a stop to that. Recently, the last two years or so, I have been called by my last name often, and not by students who I would have expected. But I hear this a lot among the younger teachers. They have nicknames for the teachers, and usually it's the last name or a shortened version of the last name. I don't know. I'd rather err on the side of respect than the other. And in this case, I think it's a matter of respect.

In my Irish family I have a father named John (deceased); a brother John (called Johnny); a nephew John (called Jack) and a BIL John, who we call by his last name. Except I have one nephew who calls BIL "the king". We aren't sure why but we get a kick out of it.

My older DD has my name as a middle name. I always said I didn't want to have to go through another round of "Which John do you want" like when we didn't know if a caller wanted brother or dad.

Another BIL is a cop and is called by his last name. However his last name is a male first name so people end up thinking they are calling him by his first name.

I grew up in a neighborhood where I was related to most people in one way or another, so it was first names always....I called my friends parents by their first names because we were actually cousins. My DH was in a similar situation, so he was always called by his first name too.
My younger DS, my 16 year old, chooses to be called by his last name. He uses it as his twitter screen name. It's funny because at one if his soccer games I was talking with a nice woman all game about my son, tommy and her son Nick (mind you there are four nicks on the team) At the end of the game we were shocked to find out that we know each other's son, Tommy is always at Nicks house, and we drive Nick all over, practices, games, parties. She never know tommy was my sons name, she has always called him by his last name because the kids did.

Name stuff doesn't bother me. My name has many forms (built in nick name), often people ask which I prefer... I don't care.

I also answer to my sisters because my sister and I look alike and went through the same school system so many called me that on occasion on accident... So did quite a few family members at times. It was easier to just answer.

In high school I went by my last name as there was a girl in all my classes (both on the honors track) and my job with the same first name. I refered to my DH by his last name all through high school (even while we were dating) because of the same issue.

I am starting to answer to a coworkers name on occasion as some of the other companies we work with keep confusing me and another girl in my office (apparently we sound alike on the phone and we sometimes cover for each other as well) This one I will correct though because it would get confusing if she got assigned my action items and she mine!

When I was in middle and high school I went through a phase where I hated a version of my name associated with young kids because it sounded so childish so I only let those under like 5 get away with it (becasue I couldn't really get mad at the 2 and 3 year old nieces). However I have pretty much gotten over that too.

Actually there is one guy at one of our customers that refer to me by that same version of my name often associated with young kids. Some have asked if I find that offensive as they think it shows a lack of respect. Personally I don't mind. That guys actions tell me that he does have respect for what I do, there are others that tend to ignore my concerns until they completely blow up as huge issues. Those are the ones I think are showing a lack of respect not the guy that changes my name.

This is the issue with my DH, except he is not a police officer. He does, however, somewhat work in that field.
