and told them I needed to look for a cheaper provider. They agreed to decrease the cost of service from $23.90 for unlimited service to $14.95 a month if I commit to a one-year contract. It doesn't take effect until 7/1/05 so I have until then to call back if I find a better deal.

Can I do better than $14.95 for unlimited internet service?

Thanks.

Unfortuantly NOT with AOL.

We have cable internet bundled with your Cable provider. I tried to cancel but it would mean my rates would skyrocket because I got the package at an awesome deal that is no longer offered.

We also have AOL but for us it is only $9.95 a month because are using our own service provider.

There is a chance you can get some more money off by taking AOL surveys at
http://www.opinionplace.aol.com/

Its legit, so far I take 1-2 surveys a month and I usually average $6 off my monthly bill making AOL only cost me about $3.95 a month now! Once you register you check back ever so often and they will look for a survey (if you take one you have to wait about 2 weeks before you qualify for another) and at the completion they credit your Credit Card you have on file with them for billing. Its quick and easy and FREE.

In writing this post I decided to check for any new surveys... I just took one and made $2.25 so that means so far my monthly AOL is only $7.50

Thanks. I'll have to check them out. I don't have cable so high-speed service isn't available and really, I don't need it anyhow. I just wanted to squeeze all I could out of AOL, or any internet provider. This board is teaching me all kinds of tricks.

what number did you use to call AOL to ask for the discount? That's great! I'd love to give them a call a well. TIA

You might want to do a search on Google or DogPile under cheap Internet Service Providers. I think you might come up with a better deal than AOL. I actually subscribe to AOL, but only on a BYOA ("bring your own access") basis. My primary ISP is Juno, through a dial-up modem, and I use AOL to organize my email pertaining to eBay sales and purchases. If you'll check the Budget Board, you'll find several threads about a special BYOA rate that AOL may or may not be offering. (There's a lot of discrepancy between what is posted on AOL, and what the operators are telling people.)

I'd love to know the number because I need to cancel my AOL as we have cable and I am not travelling anymore!

You might try 1-866-489-4678 (toll free). If that's only the department for upgrading to version 9.0, they should be able to transfer you or give you the right toll free number.

The number I used is the one printed on my credit card bill. It is a toll free number and is:800-827-6364.

Do I need cable or is Juno dial-up as well?

Well, I called AOL and the said I could get the $14.95 unlimited, but I have dial-up so it's a no-go?! Is this true???

My Juno service is dial-up, and I have used the AOL BYOA plan (@$9.95/month) quite successfully for several years now. The AOL description of my current plan states unlimited access using a high-speed broadband connection, but I figured they use that language because that's what most people who subscribe to AOL BYOA access use these days.

The only thing I use AOL for is eBay sales and purchases - so I can keep all of that correspondence separate from everything else. Any time I log on to AOL, I am first connected to the Internet through Juno. Hope this answers your question.

If you only use AOL for email, you should inquire about the 2.95 a month plan where you only have access to AOL by the web (www.aol.com), rather than using the actual AOL service.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I want to be able to file the emails in my AOL filing cabinet on my computer, where I can reference them without even being on line.

I'm not sure I understand. The $14.95 is for unlimited dial-up internet service. My cost went from $23.90 for the service to the $14.95, effective on my next payment date, essentially saving me $9 a month.

fkj2...thanks for that info. I'll try again with a different operator. I thought that was kind of odd. I'll let you all know how it goes!

After 5 phone calls in the past 3 days, we finally were able to lower our dial-up, unlimited service from $21.95 to $14.95. Three people we spoke with said we couldn't do it--either becasue the offer had expired or because we had dial-up. One said we could, but my DH would have to call back as his was the primary name. When he did call back he was told no, again and then put on hold for a manager. Luckily we were disconnected and when he called backed and requested the cancellation department, the person there finally agreed to swich us to a lower plan, beginning next month. What a bunch of B.S.! At least it was resolved in a favorable manner and with surveys I do at Opinion Place our bill should be right around $10 month! :cool1:

Thanks to OP for making me even think of calling to get a lower plan!!!!! :Pinkbounc

Do you often get the message that there are no surveys available, and you have to wait seven days before you can try again? My adult daughter and I use the same account, and it seems like no matter which one of us tries, we often get the "none available" message - which only comes after we've spent several minutes clicking boxes for a long list of beauty products (as to whether or not we use them, and then another list as to whether we purchase them ourselves, or have someone else do the buying) - and lists of whether we smoke, drink coffee or soda or wine on a daily basis, etc. etc. There are usually a number of product type lists that we go through before getting the "sorry, no surveys are available at this time". It definitely helps when they are available, but is pretty frustrating when we get the "sorry" two or three weeks in a row.

:sad2: :confused3 :badpc:

I called AOL last night and was able to lower my rate from 23.95 to 14.95. The reason they said I qualified is because I have cable modem at my house and use dial up extensively when I'm away from home. I have unlimited dial up with this rate so it's definately saving me some money. I'm going to try to do the surveys and even save myself some more money. :cool1: :goodvibes

As far as a survey for AOL discounts go, I believe you can only do one a month for one discount. I've only tried a few times, one time a month, and have gotten a discount $3-$4 each time taken off my C.C. bill. HTH!

Depending on when in the month you sign on to the site you are correct. There is a 2-week waiting period between surverys. So the best is to get on schedule to take one at the beginning and then middle of the month.
