California Screaming shut down after rider set up selfie stick on the ride!

However things like glasses are need for seeing. They are important and required by people to get around...they are not toys like selfie sticks and cameras...that was my point..

There's no reason that they can't require glasses to be secured before riding. I require glasses. I'm pretty much blind without them. If I'm not wearing contacts, I put them away on upside down coasters (after I sit in the train). It isn't worth losing them (which I've had happen before). I put them back on as the train is entering the station, so I don't hold up anyone while exiting. There are also straps that can be attached to glasses to secure them to a.persons head. There are solutions for those who require glasses.

All I'm saying is that size matters little in terms of what can cause injury as items of all sizes can cause significant injury. While I agree with banning selfir sticks,I hope Disney doesn't get to the point of having metal detectors to go through before entering CA Screamin

Absolutely no one wants to see your face or how you act on a ride or roller coaster Disney has photo pass opportunities if you want a picture of yourself on the ride that bed

Isn't Disney promoting the "me, me, me" mentality? It is MY Disney Experience after all.
Perhaps they should rename it the "My Considerate, Polite, Non-judgmental Disney Experience"?

Eye glasses are light in weight and people need them to see.......

I also see most people taking their glasses off on coaster type attractions and packing them away. I know I do with sun glasses

Well I guess are not really far apart, I was just pointing out glasses are important to people. selfie sticks are not really *needed*.

and I agree, I would also hope metal detectors do not show up a thrill rides!

I think the only Universal ride that has the metal detector is the Hulk coaster. I could be wrong. It required a locker before anyway. Part of the problem is that guests can walk almost underneath it, so falling stuff would conk them. I don't think guests who are not riding can get very close to any of Disney's coasters.

According to this article from April 2015, the Universal attractions with metal detectors are Rip Ride Rockit, Dragon Challenge and Hulk.

ETA: Apparently riders have 2 choices for the loose change that goes through the metal detector - get out of line and store the loose change or staying in line and surrendering the loose change (at which point it gets donated to Give Kids the World).

there's nothing wrong with taking some quick selfies. It's the persons waving those sticks around and trying to video everything they do, including moving rides. Trying to use a handheld anything on a roller coaster the size of Screamin is pretty dangerous.

My friend got hit in the head by a lens cap that fell off somebody's big camera that they'd dragged out while riding a roller coaster. Good thing he only dropped the cap and not the whole camera.

MM, you hit the point right on! A selfie by itself is fine.........but using them on coaster type rides, with the camera and stick waving around is just rude and not using common sense or concern for other guests on or around the attraction.

Well fitting eyeglasses should not come off during a ride, upside-down or not. I use a sport strap on the wilder rides, though it is largely unnecessary. At Universal, even with the metal detectors and mandatory lockers, they said I could keep my glasses on.

I was something like 10 years old when I lost my glasses on a coaster. I did get them back and they were fine, but it left an impression :P

At Cedar Point they ask my daughter every single time if her glasses are secured with a strap, and if they aren't, she'll have to remove them. (She's pretty much blind without them so she has like four glasses straps for our trips to Cedar Point)

She took the strap with her to WDW and wore it on RnRC just in case.

I do carry a strap, but find I largely don't need it. I learned this when I once forgot to put it on before boarding a ride. The thing is, I am totally blind without my specs so I'm not taking them off, especially at Disney where scenery is so important even on the roller coasters.

What kinds of straps do you all find works best for glasses/sunglasses (necessary) on fast rides and roller coasters?

I think the big difference with selfie sticks is that rides were designed with the expectation that people would extend their hands. They were not designed for people to extend their hands with a 3 foot pole extended. Thus, the likelihood of someone smacking that extension pole into part of the ride is substantially increased.

Disney had no choice but to ban them. It was inevitable.

And no way am I riding California Screamin without my glasses. That view is part of the attraction for me.

I was at Six Flags Texas 3 weeks ago and when we went on Texas Giant my friend realized on the lift hill that her glasses were on the top of her head, she uses them for reading. She grabbed them and stuffed them in her shirt. i guess the attendants did not notice.
