California Screaming shut down after rider set up selfie stick on the ride!

Selfies are not a recent phenomenon. People have been taking pictures of themselves since cameras were invented. Here's one from 1839.

The only thing that has changed is that people now have access to tools like selfie sticks. It's not a narcissism problem. It's a common sense problem.

I'm pretty sure they'd have a hard time banning them. I have one that's a monopod for my 35mm DSLR. I can attach a holder for my cell phone to do a selfie, but it is not primarily a selfie stick. Also, I'd never use it or my cell phone or my camera on a ride. More than the fact that it might injure someone, I don't want to damage or lose my camera or phone.

Selfie sticks and those that use them - no matter where used - are highly annoying. Hope they're a fad that goes away sooner than later.

This person should have had the selfie stick taken from them and given a colonoscopy with it.

Too funny. Now I have to get that mental image out of my head. Thanks.

...and by the way, saw your sig, love the Freedom class ships. (more than Oasis class actually)

Why not ban people sitting on someone's shoulders? It obstructs other's view and can be dangerous to others.

Sure they could. If they see one in a bag at bag check, right there is a point where they could confiscate it. If they see you using one around the park, same thing.

I'm fairly certain that if you tried to have someone sit on your shoulders on California Screamin', or Everest, or The Tea Cups, or even IASW, you would be told that you cannot do this. So, yeah. I think it is already banned.

Pretty sure they are referring to parades and firework shows.

Especially a coaster type ride, where if the stick broke or the camera broke off the stick or the person lost their grip on the stick and it all went flying though the air, it could easily do severe injury to people on the ride or around the ride. That is the concern.

If that's the major concern,.then it seems you are more looking for a ban on anything that could be a projectile. Glasses fall off on these types of rides all the time, and they can definitely injure someone. Handheld cameras - point and shoots and SLRs- and handheld phones can be dropped. Even cameras with neck straps can have the neck strap fail and become a projectile.

I do agree that selfie sticks on rides is dangerous and shouldn't be allowed, but I hope Disney doesn't extrapolate that too far to other things.

It's all fun & games until someone loses an eye.

And someone actually did lose an eye on Dragon Challenge at Universal (back when it was Dueling Dragons) because of an unsecured item belonging to another guest.

Why anyone would think bringing a selfie stick on a roller coaster would be a good idea is beyond me.

That Pirates Of The Caribbean CM story though....

I see the possibility of a selfie stick(long and narrow) and camera going flying a much bigger threat the a small camera (box shape) being held in someone's hand. Eye glasses are light in weight and people need them to see.........a selfie stick and camera...................not a need, just a toy.

I also see most people taking their glasses off on coaster type attractions and packing them away. I know I do with sun glasses

IIRC, universal now has metal detectors before some of its coasters and don't even allow loose change in pocketd because of the damage it can cause if it falls out. Things that are small and light are absolutely capable of causing injury when they become projectiles.

I, for one, don't want to see metal detectors showing up at the entrance to CA Screamin

We had the People Mover stopped and I believe it was due to a self stick. Before the ride was started again an announcement was made telling people not to extend their selfie sticks outside of the car.

And hopefully this can lighten up the mood - I was once hit with an unsecured turkey leg while on a roller coaster. After the ride started the guy in front of me pulled out a turkey leg from under his shirt. As soon as the ride picked up speed he started losing pieces of turkey which came falling back at me and my cousin. He put it away after a few seconds but it definitely made for an interesting ride.

Soooo rude on his part, I would have been choked for sure. I must admit, though, I laughed out loud when I read about the 'unsecured turkey leg'!!

However things like glasses are need for seeing. They are important and required by people to get around...they are not toys like selfie sticks and cameras...that was my point..
