California legalizes dogs in restaurants

The title of the thread is "California legalizes dogs in restaurants." TVguy wrote "Sort of" and then provided the link.

It's not so far fetched to think that California might possibly legalize the serving of dog meat under certain circumstances. It's fairly well known that certain cultures eat dog on occasion in Asia, and that California has a large Asian population.

Every couple of years there's a story out of California where someone's pet "went missing" and it's suspected it was trapped by an Asian in order to be eaten. So I wouldn't be totally surprised that some people do eat dog in this country.

Yep, I think what I said was perfectly fine. Report me if you think it's offensive. Shrug.

I mean, seriously? How do eight people post after reading something like that and let it pass without comment? Is everyone here who reads this board okay with this?

I think the fact that Jim here seems to think what he said was perfectly fine is of more concern than whether dogs are allowed in restaurants.

Why don't you post under your real name? Your first post is to start a racial debate?

Once my dad took in a dog that someone was giving away. We already had a dog and had that dog with a relative. It ran away and wasn't found, but that's another matter.

However, one reason why my dad took in the dog was that a Cantonese guy apparently wanted the dog and talked about fattening it up to slaughter and eat. And he probably wasn't joking. I'm not sure if it was illegal back then.

I am probably going to be flamed but for goodness sake leave your dogs at home. THey are not people. I love my cat so maybe I should be allowed to bring him to the restaurant. After all he doesn't like being left at home all the time. Real Service dogs not these mail order one's do not bother me but I would not really like to be eating with a whole lot of dogs all around me. My cat goes on a harness and leash so he should be fine to go.

Here's the thing. Citing "culture" and grouping an entire continent of diverse people together under that umbrella to justify using a stereotype to make a terribly unfunny and offensive remark is ridiculous. You might as well defend calling a black person a "spearchucker" because they come from a culture that hunted with spears in Africa. How is saying "Asians eat dogs" any different? You might get a few awkward smiles if you do it within close polite company but if you said that kind of thing to a wider group of people in real life, you're going to get stares of disbelief or worse.

There is right and there is wrong, and just because this is the internet does not make it any different from speaking to a roomful of people. The only thing is that the level of anonymity allows some others to also try to defend the indefensible, like a couple of others here have tried to do so.

The ones who are not speaking up probably do not want to get into trouble on the board but that is also part of the problem because behavior is learned. People shape their impulses through positive or negative responses. If posters allow statements like that to stand without saying anything, the level of casual and offensive obliviousness exhibited in your remark is never going to change.

The statement was not perfectly fine and never will be. At some point, it has to sink in that what you said cannot be defended at all and that you have to be a little introspective about the things you write before you click on the button to post in the future.

You speak as if you think there is something wrong with eating dog meat. It's a cultural taboo in Western cultures and most likely illegal in the US and many other nations. It's an acceptable practice in some countries, although the acceptance appears to be declining. Governments where it is practiced seem to be embarrassed about it and probably attempt to keep it hushed up.

I don't believe eating dog meat is wrong. If people care to eat it, I don't have a problem with it. Nothing pejorative was meant by my comments and I don't apologize for them.

You've stated your opinion. This is mine.

Dogs on restaurant patios has been allowed in our area for years. I don't mind that at all but I definitely don't want ordinary Fido's IN restaurants so hopefully it will never come to that.

As for some cultures eating dogs, of course that has happened. To pretend otherwise is naïve.

ETA: I read through some of the comments again and I think that the offense came from making a blanket statement. Of course, not all people from any area do this but instead some have. It's grotesque no matter who does it though.

HunterRose, trying to explain to people on this board why racial stereotypes are offensive is just going to get you called "politically correct" by people who believe that empathy is a bad thing. It's not worth it.

Back to the dogs being allowed on patios/outside areas of restaurants: Been allowed for many years in areas of FL and NY so in my opinion CA doing it isn't actual news. They are just catching up with other areas. I don't have a problem with it.

As I mentioned, we live in a VERY dog friendly area. I don't know a single restaurant that has an outside patio that does not allow dogs.

Here is a picture of a local bar that not only allows dogs, but has a dedicated dog patio.

Edited to add: There are several of these bars and restaurants that have combined a quasi dog park and the ability to get a drink and some food.

As for the restaurants, there are always dogs on the patios. However, state regulations still forbid dogs inside any establishment (service dogs excepted) that sells food. So, if you are not comfortable around dogs, you can always choose to eat inside where dogs are not allowed.

I have found that allowing dogs in controlled places has minimized the need of many to turn their dog into a fake service dog just so they can bring them along.

I LOVE, love, love dogs, and cats. The problem is I am highly allergic. It's one of life's little fun things that I get to deal with. Should one come near me the desire is to just pet them/However danger, danger. I am allergic. I have done the pills, the shots TWICE. I can't get my body to cooperate.Touch a sweet animal that only wants love and the touch my eyes and game over. I LOVE them but I can't touch them.

Smell them and I am needing my inhaler. Believe me I don't want it like this buy my body reacts.

If one scratches me or bites me I get a big burning rash and a whole lot more. (I was bitten by a dog wile delivering papers in my childhood and recently with a friends little dog that has "issues" the reaction was the same.)

I have to say that i adore these animals. However I want to be able to eat a meal without running to my inhaler. Is that too much to ask?

I can see looking for a restaurant while traveling with your dog that would have a patio where you could dine with your dog. I can't understand why anyone would take their pet to a restaurant unless they are traveling or they needed the dog for assistance. I would prefer not to eat while animals are running around, but I don't have a problem if a restaurant has a patio area for the pets. I would just eat inside.

IMHO much ado about nothing. You will have plenty of notice about a dog friendly restaurant. The dogs have an outside area. You won't have to pass them to get to the front door. They won't be scratching you or get anywhere near you.

You can choose to eat inside or go somewhere else. Make sense ?

Hopefully plenty of restaurants will choose not to participate.

P.S. Wasn't sure what to expect when I opened the thread. I know there are a lot of Vietnamese and other Asians in California, but.....

BAD JIM! BAD, BAD JIM!! paw:

Really? Because ALL dog owners are good at controlling them :rotfl2:

Here's a good example of why someone would frequent a restaurant with their dog.

My cousins live near the Detroit area and have two dogs that they frequently walk. To have a restaurant nearby where they could sit down and have a snack, a cup of coffee or even a beer outside while sitting with their dogs (who really are their children since they don't have any children) and catching up with their neighbors. Since my cousins go out to eat fairly often, they may return to that restaurant at night with friends and eat inside.

It's a win-win situation for both my cousins and the restaurant owner. The dogs are outside, my cousins get a place to sit and relax with their 'children', people who don't like dogs or are allergic to dogs can choose to sit inside, and the owner makes money.

Regarding the funny comment about eating dogs: I find it interesting that most of the posters read that comment, disregarded it for one reason or another and stayed pleasantly on topic discussing the outside patio dog issue. I didn't see any shred of ******* until one person decided to take issue with it. So is the cause of the ******* the comment itself (which I didn't understand until it was explained further on) or the righteously indignant person leveling charges at everyone except herself/himself?

Hmm...I'll have to think about that one in context of what is really causing the ills of this world: The people saying things deemed "wrong" by some or the people screaming about the things that the other person said.

Thanks for the brain food!

No I wouldn't ever say that Lisa, I'm just saying that the restaurants that allow it ( from what I have seen and someone else posted previous ) you won't have to be anywhere near them. Just know I am not making light of your allergies and concerns. If anything I am trying to reassure you.

While you're deep in thought, why don't you consider whether you like stereotypes about your ethnic group being used for a laugh. "Dog eater" as an ethnic slur against Asians also has a history and its a stereotype that is intended to exclude and demean. I just posted about stereotypes against Americans bothering me in the pet peeve thread, and I'm not going to keep quiet about ethnic stereotypes here either. There's a thread about antisemitism on the board at the moment too. There are plenty of people who find stereotyping wrong and stand up for their beliefs by speaking out so please, give it a rest with saying people who speak out are the problem, and keeping quiet is so peaceful and enlightened. Just because the phrase doesn't denigrate YOU doesn't make it ok.
