What is the dress policy for the California Grill? On the WDW Info site, it says it is "resort casual, no tanktops or swimwear." Is it more casual or more formal?

~Simon :)

I definitely wouldn't show up in a swimsuit :rotfl: but I think people have made CG into a more casual restaurant. Personally, when DBF and I go we dress on the nicer side just because we think the setting is a little nicer than the average WDW restaurant. But we've seen people in shorts and tees with backpacks, so I guess it doesn't really matter. (Although DBF and I didn't have children with us so we had the time to take to get dressed... I'm sure if we did have kids with us, our attire wouldn't be the first thing on our minds!) I don't think they would refuse to serve you or anything for wearing reasonably casual clothes.

I believe the formal dress code is "business casual". They really don't want people in tank tops, shorts and jeans. When DH and I went there we both dressed up. He wore kahkis and a polo shirt and I wore a skirt and a dressy top. It's not overly formal, but it's a beautiful dining room and you enjoy it more if you dress up a bit! :goodvibes

We went for xmas day and DH and DS(16) wore khakis and polo shirts, My sisters and I(all 50 something) were slacks and xmas sweaters(mine was disney of course). Others did have jeans, but most were similar if not dressier than us. As we were leaving they asked a man who came of the elevator wearing hawaiian board shorts to leave. He did not make a seen(even though he was with DW and infant), but I can't figure out why the folks at check-in on 2nd floor did not stop him.

i went around the 4th of july with my parents. the plan was for my mom & i to spend the day at MK while my dad golfed, then we would meet up for dinner. to be comfortable at the park, i wore a teeny pair of shorts and a silly minnie mouse t-shirt during the day. my dad was SUPPOSED to bring a dress for me to change into for the cali grill...but he forgot! i was MORTIFIED. i was so sure they wouldn't let me in, i hid behind my mom when we were checking in. but, they didn't so much as bat an eyelash!

True about the tank tops, but they're okay with dress shorts and nice jeans (no rips). Here's the definition of "business casual" copied directly from the disney website's California Grill page:
Dress Attire is Business Casual
Men: Dress slacks, jeans, trousers, or dress shorts, short or long-sleeved shirt with a collar required. Jackets are optional.
Ladies: Jeans, skirts, or dress shorts with blouse or sweater, or a dress required.
Not permitted in dining room: tank tops, swimming suits or swim suit cover ups, t-shirts, hats for gentleman, cut offs, or torn clothing of any kind.
Hope that helps.

I agree.

You'll see most everything at the CG. In all the years we've been going (which is since it opened), the dress code has never been enforced. Most folks do comply (sort of) with the code. Which includes jeans and "dress shorts".

They are much more likely to enforce the dress code with the adults in the party. As much as I tried, I could not get my DD16 to wear shoes, only flipflops. They did not refuse her, because the rest of us were dressed properly. I don't think they even noticed.

I doubt they even noticed. And-it probably really didn't matter. The dress code makes no mention of footwear.
At our last meal at CG (and at all the Signature restaurants where we ate) flip-flops and sandals actually outnumbered every other kind of foot wear.
.

DS will be thrilled to hear that he doesn't have to wear his "church shoes";) new sneakers it is!
