So I was booking Cali Grill for New Year Eve and it had availability at 730pm so I thought wow. Then it wanted a $500 per person pre pay. Is it some special event? Sounds crazy expensive.

Yes - that would be called "New Years Eve" . The Grill WILL do this right, hence the fairly decent price tag .
