calf pain

Hi all,
Recently I have had a significant problem crop up with my walking. No matter if I am on a treadmill or outside, within 5 minutes of a 17 - 18 mph pace my calves begin burning to the point that they feel like they will explode.
I have good shoes that are not worn out
I stretch my calves, shins and legs before I start
I walk for about 5 minutes at a relaxed pace to warm up
I stretch again.

A month ago I walked a 5k at a 16 mph pace and had no problem. Last weekend I started out to walk 10k and at only .5 mile in I had to stop and turn around :confused3

Within 10 - 20 minutes of stopping my activity the pain simply fades away.

Does anyone else have experience with this?

Thanks!
Anne

Hi Anne,
I've not had any experience with this, but it sure sounds uncomfortable. Seems like there are lots of things that can cause burning sensations in the calf muscle (from a quick google search). It seems like the kind of thing you probably want to check with your doctor about.

i have had this happen before, couple years ago, but it only happened once or twice. I'll move this up to Events/Competition where the seasoned walkers are a'plenty.....

sounds like shin splints? I get them quite frequently. Unfortunatley, I just have to slow my pace for a mile or 2 and then it goes away but does leave my legs pretty fatigued. Sorry other then what you have said you do I have no idea how to fix it but just keep stretching and icing.

I know they hurt so much....more then my PF, feels like my shin is going to snap in half. Lots of PD coming your way, hope it gets better for you.

Thanks all,
I am going to PT on thursday, hopefully they can help. Last night I kept a pace between a 20 minute and 18 minute mile and I did ok. However, as we all know, the pace for the half in January is 16 minute mile.....i WILL be able to do it by January!

Yes, you WILL! Here's hoping the PT will be able to help you with this. Let us know. I'm cheering for you!
