Sorry, I know this info is here somewhere but I can't find it.

Has anyone stayed at the Etap Calais (Coquelles) - is that the one at Cite Europe? Is it to be recommended just to sleep in after an evening tunnel 'crossing', ready to get up and drive to DLP the next day?

Is there anywhere better but as cheap/cheaper?

TIA :)

My parents stayed there last year when they were a day early for thier Eurotunnel crossing :confused3

They said that it was ok, comfortable bed for the night but they wouldn't have spent more than a night or two there as the rooms were small. It's right next to the Cinema end of Cite Europe and very, very easy to find.

Would have thought it would be a good choice for an overnight stay ready for the morning drive.

I don't know about the Etap Calais, but another option would be to spend the night on the UK side. There's a Holiday Inn Express right next to the Eurotunnel terminal, so it's all of about 5 minutes from the hotel.

If I remember rightly, I think the early morning crossings are the cheapest ones as well :thumbsup2

Thanks, but we decided we might as well get over to France the night before (the evening crossing is cheaper than the next morning, unless we book a crossing before 6am! plus we don't have to get up early to get to it! Our daughter is NOT a morning person!).

We're going in December so don't want to have to deal with a potentially frosty / icy morning stopping us getting to the tunnel - if we're already in France we can get going as soon as we're ready and hopefully be at DLP by lunchtime.

I think we'll go for it if no-one's got any better (in France) ideas - it's cheap enough :)

Remember to pack de-icer though! I stopped for the night in Dunkerque and the car was thick in ice the next morning!

Hi, just to report back as we stayed there last week twice - on the way, then on the way back again!

The rooms were small but clean, good shower and comfortable beds (my 3 priorities!).

However - when we arrived at 9.15pm (on the way to DLP) the receptionist told us that reception had closed at 9pm so we needed to check in at the machine - no problem at all. EXCEPT that when we got to the room it was a smoking one, and it smelt disgusting :scared1: I ran back to reception - fortunately the man was still there closing up and he did change the room for us, but if he hadn't been there still there is no way of changing the room allocation on the machine. Apparently you have to phone ahead to request a non-smoking room.

So, we requested a non-smoking room for our return night stay there and then. However we decided to make sure we got there before 9pm just in case it was wrong - the smoking room was so horrible we couldn't have slept in it. We arrived at 8pm this time and our room was allocated already - no problem. So we watched TV for a bit, then I went to have a shower an hour or so later - NO TOWELS!!!! The reception man had gone this time, and there was nothing we could do about it. I ended up having a shower without washing my hair, and using the tiny bath mat as a make-do towel! My husband and daughter had to go without - fortunately we were only going straight home in the morning.

SO - yes I would stay there again as it was so convenient (less than 5 minutes drive from the Eurotunnel - though getting back there on the morning we left was very complicated for some reason. We ended up driving round and round (back past the hotel 3 times!) but made it in the end about 25 minutes after we left!).

BUT I would definitely PHONE AHEAD to pre-book a non-smoking room and CHECK THE ROOM on arrival to make sure nothing's missing, before the receptionist closes up for the night!

Hi,

We've used the B&B Hotel chain - same principle, pay for the room, they do family rooms for 4 2A & 2C, compact rooms but has all you could want and always been clean and presentable and fully furnished! Can book over the net or phne but the same scenario, only manned during certain hours in the evening else it is card operated. Sure there is one in Calais for future reference.

Rgds

I'm too late to help you, Minnie Mouse 73, but just wanted to echo what others have said. We stayed overnight here in August. Like you, we wanted the crossing to be over the night before and head off in the morning. I wouldn't have wanted to stay more than one night - the rooms were so small as to almost feel cell like, but for just an overnighter, they were okay.
We noticed there were 2 other hotels sharing the car park, one about 30 Euros more expensive per night and one about 60 Euros more. If you wanted to spend just a little more, these were just as convenient.
