Cake Question

Our planner just sent us the Wedding Cake Presentation packet so we can decide on our style of wedding cake. I really want to do a fun (read over the top), unique wedding cake, and all of the styles they have seem pretty traditional (with the exception of the Mad Hatter). I love the Mad Hatter Cake, but our wedding colors are shades of silver and gray, and I don't think a Mad Hatter would look very good in those colors.

My question(s) regarding cakes: Has anyone had them do a custom cake design? If so, did you give them a picture of what you wanted, or just give them some guidelines and have them run with it? Does Disney charge any additional fees for doing a cake not in their "Presentation Packet"? If you did a custom cake and could post pictures and answer any of these questions, that would be sooooo helpful. I know there is a cake thread on here but it seemed like the majority of those cakes came from the presentation packet.

Any input would be great! Also not sure if this makes a difference, but our cake will be coming from the GF bakery. Thanks in advance!

Neither of our cakes were from the list andboth are posted on the wedding cake thread on this board and on the cake chatter threads as well!

Ours involved inspiration pictures, emails and at least one faxed sketch! There are tons of personalized cakes to be found around here. We were very happy with ours in the end! They also came from the GF. The prices are quite high and varied though. Depends alot on size and what you are looking for. Good luck! 

I hadn't seen the Cake Chatters thread, I will definitely check that out. Thanks so much!

DFTW blog posts photographs of Disney cakes each Wednesday, affectionately known as wedding cake Wednesday. It may be worth taking a peek for some inspiration. :)

Since you mentioned a really fun over the top cake it reminded me of a cake I saw in the local paper when I was planning my wedding. The cake is of the Alnwick Garden Fountains in Northumberland, UK. Thought it might help you think of Disney rides/themes you could turn into a cake like this. Who knows they may even be able to create a Disney castle cake, though I'd hate to pick up the bill.

Also did a quick google and found the following websites which feature some of the most extravagant cakes I've ever seen, it'll be fun to take a peek if nothing else!

Those are totally the kinds of cakes I was talking about! That seahorse cake is incredible. I would love to do a "ride" cake, but DF thinks I am insane. So I figure maybe if I can pull together some pictures then I can convince him? Our wedding is super formal and I feel like the one thing we can really lighten up is the cake!

It's a nice surprise for everyone too! If your DF really isn't keen you can always compromise with a wacky cake topper! :cutie:

I did a surprise HM grooms cake. Another bride had a splash mountain wedding cake!

I have spent many many many hours on these boards!!! :scared1:

Your groom's cake was incredible! I would love to do a cake that plays off Space Mountain, since that color palette works really well with our wedding colors..... oh and because that ride is freakin' awesome... just gotta convince my future husband!

Can I have a link to the cake chatter thread? we'll be in WDW in May and I'd like to order a small replica of our wedding cake (it's close to our 1-year anniversary and the only time we'll be in WDW during that time). Thanks!!

Who wouldn't want to spend hours drooling over cake?! Kinder to the hips than the alternative. :rotfl:

You might be surpised at what Disney can do with your colours and a mad hatter cake. Our colours are green, ivory and pink. Here is our madd hatter cake:

As Sambycat said, many of us have had custom wedding cakes. It's easiest if you can give them a picture, or at least a photo composite showing elements of different cakes that you want on yours. Good sources for inspiration are Flickr.com, The Knot, and Cake Central.com. The GF Bakery will give you a custom price quote based on the number of guests and complexity of the design.

Here's the inspiration pic we gave our planner:

And here's how our cake turned out (we made the topper)—pretty dang good!
