Caitlyn Jenner

I don't think Caitlyn fits a 65 year old woman. I am 64 years old and my friends and I have names like: Marilyn, Nancy, Sandy, Connie, Patricia, Linda, Carol, etc. I have never known anyone my age named Caitlyn. It just doesn't fit and is off-putting in my opinion. Of course, not my choice to make.

I agree-its a younger generation name!
other names of women in that age group I know-Susan, Bonnie, Mary, Catherine, Louise

I don't agree with this either. You shouldn't be able to rewrite history like that. Should his birth certificate be revised to say female? I'm very much in support of her choosing her own identity, but believe the records should reflect whatever was the reality at that point in time. It would get too confusing otherwise!

Nobody insisted Chris Evert's accomplishments from 1979-1987 must remain under the name Chris Evert Lloyd.

Not even remotely the same.

A gratuitous assertion that can be equally gratuitously refuted.

Yes it is.

What is so complicated about listing the winner of the mens decathlon in year X under the name Caitlyn Jenner?

Nothing. Absolutely nothing. And it isn't revising history any more than changing Chris Evert Lloyd's accomplishments to the name Chris Evert.

If Caitlyn identifies as a woman, how can Caitlyn be the winner of a past men's event?

Uhhhh Because Jenner had a gender change in the mean time. What's so hard about that? How is that too difficult a concept for anyone to grasp? As far as keeping records goes, it's a name change. It doesn't mean she suddenly won the Heptathlon instead of the Pentathlon. Now that would be changing history. A simple name change isn't.

I haven't read anything that indicates whether or not Caitlyn will take the IOC up on their offer, I just know they made it clear that the option was there. As far as the birth certificate... yes, of course the birth certificate will be (may already be) revised - this is incredibly common after people transition.

I just think changing the name would cause some confusion in Olympic history. In 30, 60, 100 years from now most people won't even know about Bruce and how he (or she) became Caitlyn. But when looking at the decathlon winners in the men's division it will show a female. I just think that would be a bit confusing.

In my opinion, anything he did as a male should remain under the name Bruce. Anything she may accomplish as a female should be under the name Caitlyn.

If they are looking at the men's division how would they be confused? Its in the men's division.
Just because Caitlyn is a "female" name to us now doesn't mean that's the way it always was or will be. It used to be common for "Carrol" to be a man's name. John Wayne was actually named Marion.

If they change the name, I'm sure there will be an asterisk and an explanation. It would be an historical fact. The first Olympian to transition to the opposite sex and paved the way for others. It won't be forgotten in the history books so there will be no confusion.

I don't understand why the name change is such a complicated issue for some people. Women do it all the time when they get married. Does anyone know how street names and sports records are handled in a situation like that? Does it stay under the maiden name or is it updated to reflect the person's current name? I have no idea, but I do know that if I were to look at a picture of Michelle Obama (just picking the first famous married woman who took her husband's name that popped into my head) when she was a child I would think, "That's Michelle Obama." I wouldn't insist that she be referred to as Michelle whatever-her-maiden-name-was just because that was the name she carried at the time the picture was taken.

If she is happy that's great, but I'm sure she doesn't look anything like the cover on VF. I saw someone who was very average looking then being airbrushed and she look beautiful.

I'm on the record for supporting any transgender person doing whatever they feel they need to do to be happy. You only live once.
However, when a woman gets married, she doesn't go back and have her name rewritten everywhere it was documented before. When I graduated high school, I was documented with my maiden name, it reflects who I was at that time. If we start to go back and reassign genders and names when it doesn't reflect reality at that time, things will get very confusing as far as record keeping goes. If it's one instance of bending the rule for Caitlyn Jenner, not a big deal. But if it became the way to do things in the future, that would cause a problem, IMO.

Yeah, I don't expect anyone to try to rewrite history. I was asking how things like Olympic records are handled in other situations where the athlete later changes their name. Are female athletes given the option to change it to reflect their married name? However it's normally handled is how I would expect it to be handled in Caitlyn Jenner's case.

My example of Michelle Obama was in regards to people (though maybe it was on a different thread) who were adamant about using 'Bruce' to discuss everything pre-transition and 'Caitlyn' for everything after. I just don't think it's that serious to make the distinction like that. I would still refer to the First Lady as Michelle Obama even if whatever I was discussing about her took place before she had the name Obama. I think people would look at me funny, and confused, if I insisted on calling her Michelle Robinson simply because that was technically her name at the time.

I think there is a big difference though in a woman getting married and changing her name then a man changing to a woman and subsequently changing his/her name. Apples and oranges.

I agree, I don't think a distinction is necessary either in a discussion of someone who changed their name for whatever reason. I was more referring to going back to change Olympic records, legal documents, etc. I would think going forward it makes sense to refer to her as Caitlyn Jenner, while preserving accuracy for the past, since it was, at the time, Bruce Jenner who actually won.
