I posted another topic looking for alternatives to the paid excursions on Nassau. Jenn responded about Cable Beach. I did a search on Cable Beach. Sounds like a beautiful beach.

A couple of questions:

1) Are there places to eat?
2) Do they offer snorkeling and other water sports?
3) Do they have any umbrellas? MIL does not go in the sun.

Just trying to find things for the adults and kids to do.

Any other thoughts or helpful hints??

Thanks!
Kim

Hello! Dh and I took a Carnival cruise this past summer with a stop in Nassau. We had researched the ports on a different website and found some amazing, insightful info there. Anyway, a tip we learned was to walk to the downtown Nassau area where the shopping and such is. Find a bus stop for the public buses. Take the #10 bus/jitney. That goes to the Cable Beach area. It is $1 per person for the ride. When you get to the area just ask the driver to stop at any one of the hotels. We stopped at the Radisson, I believe, but I could be wrong there. Anyway, we just walked into the hotel, I used the ladies room to change into my suit, then we walked out the back onto the beach. Cable Beach is a public beach, meaning the hotel can not bar you from using the beach in the back of their property. There were plenty of lounge chairs, a beachfront bar for drinks, areas to rent water "toys," and I'm sure there were places to find snacks to eat but I don't recall specifics. And with so many hotels there are bound to be indoor restaurants, I assume, though we didn't take note of any b/c we weren't looking for them. Coming back you'll want to look for the same #10 bus which will deposit you right back in the shopping area where you can quickly walk back to the dock to get on the ship. Plan on each bus ride being about 15 min and you'll have time to spare.

Enjoy your trip. Cable Beach was quite lovely.

Edited b/c I forgot to answer about the umbrellas--yes, I saw umbrellas on the beach. They weren't as plentiful as the lounge chairs but there were some.

If you walk through the Wyndham hotel, there is a walkway on the beach side between the hotel and the casino. There are two or three sit down restaurants, an ice cream shop that also has fruit, pastries and drinks and a couple of shops for souveniers and sundries. On the other side of the casino in the walkway between the casino and the Radisson, there is (or used to be, its been a couple of years since I've been there) another ice cream place, a liquor store with good island prices, and a few other shops. Both hotels have beach bars that serve lunch, and plenty of restaurants. They are all expensive though, everything has to be shipped or flown in to the island.
There are vendors on the beach that will be more than happy to sell you banana boat rides, parasailing, jet ski rides, etc.

I just thought I'd share my experience at Cable beach a few weeks ago. The buses to the beach were easy to find and the driver dropped us off at the Wyndham hotel. We walked through the hotel to the back where the pool and Wyndham's "beach" were. Almost the entire section of Wyndam's beach has a barrier wall without water access...there is a small section (no waves) where you can access the water.

We proceeded down the beach past the hotel so we could sit right at the water where our children could go into the water. The section right after the Wydham is where you can rent wave runners and you can't really swim there, so we kept going. When we went to sit in the next group of chairs, we were told by security that if we weren't staying at that hotel, we couldn't use the chairs, a woman came up to us and told us if we were from the cruise ships we could only use the ones directly behind the wave runners.

We ended up going to sit by the Wyndham pool, which was very nice but we kept waiting for someone to ask us if we were staying there because everyone had dark blue towels and we had the white towels from the ship. Although nobody approached us we felt a little like intruders and were never able to fully relax. We only stayed a few hours because the sky became very cloudy so we left.

Next time I'll need to be a little more prepared for where to sit and what's actually allowed.
