Cab Service?

We have a ADR at Ohana for 9:50pm the night of arrival... we land at 6:11..so we will be trying to make it over there with the fastest transportation possible. We've never taken a cab in disney before so for anyone who has, I have a couple questions..

1. Do I just call the front desk and ask for a cab to the Poly? (staying at AOA, not sure if that makes a difference.)
2. DTD closes @12am, so I doubt dinner would be done fast enough to catch bus to DTD & back to AOA.. so in that case.. are we able to go to the front desk @ Poly and ask for a cab? (most important question haha)
3. How much would a cab from AOA to Poly usually run?

Thanks everyone!

We usually book a Mears car service. It's $30 with tip, a little more than going with a cab, but there's no watching a meter rise and rise, which I like.

I've never paid $30 for a taxi ride on property. I'd much rather watch a meter rise to $20. Or less.

Like I said, it's more than going with a taxi (but not by much). The option isn't for everyone, but for $5 - $10 more it's worth it for us. We took a cab back from V&A to Beach Club one night years ago and it cost us $25. Maybe it's from living in NYC, but I hate watching cab fares rise while I'm just sitting there - so trusting!. I also much prefer to pay a flat rate in advance. Maybe it's also the planner in me. I like knowing that I have a care waiting and it's taken care of. It's not for everyone though.

Uber is the way to go. Ive taken it between resorts a few times and it is almost always less than $10. There are enough ubers around WDW that I have never had to wait more than 5-7 minutes for one.

The cabs are mears and when ever we have dinners at resorts we always cab it. Never has been more than 20 with tip and every single resort and downtown disney has a line of cabs waiting. I have never waited more than 2 minutes for one to pull right up. Used to call down ahead of time or schedule one and both are either a waste of time or money.

When we took a cab from POFQ to GF and BC last year, there were cabs waiting to be called over in the parking lot out front. We just told one of the CM's outside that we needed a cab and they waved one right over. I am assuming they are outside waiting at all of the resorts- we did the parks after those adrs so we did not need a cab back to FQ. This is very easy and shouldn't cost most than $20 but even if so.. it is much more worth it than rushing and relying on the buses and other transportation to get you to the Poly in time to get to your ADR.

I agree about using Uber. Mears is easy because it is right there but sometimes the customer service isn't always the best.

It is only cheaper as long as they are not in high demand when you want them. As demand rises, so do their rates.

Of course. But you know in advance of booking the Uber whether you'll be subject to surge pricing. And if surge pricing is in effect, depending on the surge rate, it sometimes is still cheaper. Besides, Uber is very popular in Orlando with the tourist nature of the city - surge pricing isn't in effect a lot there.

Another Uber user here & love it! I've never had the surge pricing in WDW even in the morning rush to get to parks or an early ADR. The most I've ever paid on property was $11. Usually around $7-9. You know right up front the wait time AND the cost, you can opt out & get a cab at that point if the time/price doesn't suit you.

All right, I will admit it. I've never used Uber and don't know how! What can I say, I'm old and out of the loop.

living in suburbia, I've rarely used cabs either, but have done a few times in Orlando.

Uber is super convenient if you have a smart phone (or similar device). You just download the app and sign up, which includes providing a credit card number.

When you're ready to hail a ride, you simply open the app and it will show you which cars are closest to you (and the approximate time it will take for the closet one to pick you up).

Once you request a ride, the app will show you the driver, the car make and model, and the license plate number of the car that will be picking you up. The app will also show where the car is relative to you (and count down the approximate time until it reaches you).

Once your ride is finished, you don't have to worry about a transaction with the driver (the cost of the ride, including the tip, is automatically charged to the credit card you provided when you signed up). This and the generally lower prices are, IMO, the two best features of Uber (one of the things I hate about taxis are the drivers acting put out when you try to pay by credit card as I dislike carrying a lot of cash around).

My only hesitation with using it at WDW is that I know that Mears is their preferred transportation service and I've always wondered if some of the resort guard stations might give Uber drivers a hard time. I also wonder if Disney may discourage its operation on WDW property as, IMO, it negates some of the location advantage of deluxe resorts (and the associated premium Disney charges for these).

Thanks for the info! So, if it is just me, would I ride in front with the driver or in the back like a cab?
