Cab reservation necessary MCO-Universal hotel

My 23 year old son will be travelling solo and will need a one-way ride from MCO to Hotel Royal Pacific at Universal. Are there cabs just hanging around waiting for people at ground transportation that he can take, or is a reservation necessary?

We just walked up to the stand and they assign you to a cab. There were many waiting, and more arriving as some were leaving. You are not supposed to walk up to an individual cab without going to the curbside stand.

Realize, Mears will be a WHOLE lot cheaper than a cab. He can book a shared mini van service from the airport to the hotel directly for roughly 20 bucks one way. http://www.mearstransportation.com/
