fab news Corinna, I know a few people who work out there and LOVE the lifestyle. well done!:cool1::cool1:

Well, what a difference a few days make. The move is off.

In the run up to the Transatlantic cruise, I made friends with some people who were on the cruise and live in Dubai. I had emailed them before I went to Dubai in the hope to meet up with them. They happened to be on holiday, but emailed me on Wednesday. They raised a few issues that put me on high alert and prompted me to ask further questions. I also did some research online and I did not like what I found out through either.

This should have been a fairly straightforward transfer and I should have kept my seniority and all the length of service related benefits. By asking a few questions, I found out that they see this as a completely new employment and I would lose all the benefits that I have worked so hard for including my profit share. This was totally unacceptable to me.

I also found out that it is normal practice that you are shown your accommodation during the interview process. This did not happen. I was just given the name of the area where I would be housed. When I googled this, I found out that this is essentially an industrial estate and that most of the residential aspect of this are labour camps. They had kept rather quite about this as well.

Needless to say, I turned down their "generous" offer yesterday and I am staying put where I am.

Sorry to hear that is hasnt come off Corrina, but it sounds with good reasons that it hasnt, and I fully understand you not wanting to lose your hard earned benifits. Hope your not too dissapointed:hug:

No, funnily enough I am not. I am angry that they tried to screw me over, but not really disappointed. I suppose it would have caused a lot of stress due to the timing as they wanted me in place by Christmas, which was far from ideal, especially with our cruise coming up straight after Christmas.

So many people have been hurt by the promise of a better life in Dubai and employers not telling the full story. Glad you found out before you moved over there.

Glad you found out about this before making this major change in your life.

You must be very disappointed that this has happened with your exisiting company.

Shame your not going but pleased you found out before moving. Not professional coming from your current employer

So sorry this happened Corinna, something similar happened to one of my friends - and believe me you would not want to live in the type of area your company were proposing you stay.

Personally I find the ethics of Dubai/UAE quite difficult and it is not somewhere I could live/visit especially if you were to live alongside labour camps.

Sounds like you've had a lucky escape! It just shows how important it is to have independent contacts when taking these sort of decisions! ;) A friend of mine in the Foreign Office was posted to that area for a while and was glad to come back, as she found it very restrictive.

Glad you found out now.

I have to say Dubai is not somewhere i'd ever want to visit, even after hearing several people on here say how much they'd loved it.

Sorry for how this has turned out but thank goodness you found out before you went.
