BWPPI or Anabella Premier room?

I have reservations at both motels for early August and would like to cancel one soon. If I were taking the grandkids I would choose BWPPI hands down because of the proximity and convenient breakfast. However, this trip I am going with a lifelong friend so it is just two 65+ ladies getting away for a few days to relax and enjoy our love of Disney. I think during the afternoon heat we may spend more time at the hotel. Both rooms are about 360 square feet. Price is about the same but without breakfast at the Anabella.

Which would you choose? Has anyone stayed at both motels that could offer a comparison? I would love feedback on location, food options and quality, rooms, cleanliness, etc. Is there anywhere close to either motel to get a good cup of coffee early in the AM? I really dislike the in room brewed stuff.

I love anabella. If you don't take ART, then you leave the hotel and cross katella and end up walking towards paradise pier and the grand Californian. Enter the grand and follow the signs towards DTD and enter the parks that way.

The other hotel is much closer to the esplanade of course. But we do love Anabella!

Thank you Bumbershoot. The walk looks like a doable .6 mile walk through the GCH - at least in the mornings. Have you had the concierge breakfast at the Anabella? I understand you get a coupon to eat at the restaurant and wonder how that works. Is it for a specific $ amount or are there only certain items that can be ordered from the menu?

We had that breakfast but it was years ago so any recollections of mine aren't accurate or timely.

I cannot recommend the concierge breakfast at the Anabella.

We've stayed at the Anabella about a half dozen times between 2013-14 -- it was our go-to Disneyland-area hotel for a while. Never again. The last time we stayed at the Anabella was over the holidays last year. We decided to extend our trip and contacted the reservations line, who sold us on upgrading to a concierge room because the Anabella was offering a special rate on their concierge rooms and my kitchen table math showed we'd be paying about the same price for a standard room but would get the free breakfast each day of our stay. Boy, do we regret it.

The concierge breakfast is served at their onsite restaurant, the Tangerine, and you have the option of a hot breakfast of eggs your way, potatoes, and bacon; or fresh fruits and a pastry; plus juice or coffee. You receive little yellow paper slips when you check in that are dated and redeemable for each day of your stay. Both choices are plated and I'd say better quality than your usual motel breakfast buffet. However, we've had some of the worst service at the Tangerine to the point where if the meal weren't included, we wouldn't bother. I truly believe that because we only patronize Tangerine when our meal is "free," we get treated like second-class guests.

On the second day of our last stay, we arrived for breakfast, were seated, and then ignored for about 15 minutes. Generally, the hostesses have always been more surly to us than not. We had presented our vouchers at arrival and our hostess pointed that our waiter would be with us shortly to take our order. The restaurant was just a little more than half full, but I saw several other tables waiting impatiently. Not a good sign. Our "waiter" never came by to take our order, even when we tried repeatedly to flag him down and even called a busboy to call his attention. Instead, our waiter kept passing our table and fussing over a large party, refilling their water, clearing their plates, etc., before moving on to tables that had left to grab the checks and his tips. We talked to the hostess, who was no help, and decided to leave and have our breakfast in the park instead. We never returned to the Tangerine again, since this experience was a real damper on our holiday vacation, and we'll never stay at the Anabella again.

We had our vouchers on our table in plain view, which was probably a mistake because we felt like our waiter kept passing us thinking he wouldn't get much of a tip from us. (For the record, we always tip generously even on complimentary meals because we know our server still performed a service.) Otherwise, there wasn't any excuse for our waiter not to take a simple order -- since the concierge breakfast only offers you two choices, send the order to the kitchen to get our breakfast started, then go back to serving other tables that were almost done.

I can't say that we've ever had a good "complimentary" meal at the Tangerine. The Anabella runs so many specials that include complimentary breakfasts or dining credits through their own site, coupon sites like LivingSocial, Groupon and Amazon Local, that I'm sure most of their diners must be using a voucher. Consequently, their wait staff must have little motivation to provide good service in the face of possibly low or no tips. That, or they're just poorly trained and managed.

Honestly, you're paying too much money to the Anabella to be treated like sh*t. Nothing is worth that, not even a free meal.

On the other hand, we've had nothing but good experiences at BWPPI -- one of our new go-to hotels (the other is the Candy Cane Inn). Both include a complimentary breakfast without the sh*tty attitude.

Thank you Lain, that is good information and it looks like the Anabella limited breakfast options could be disappointing as well as delay our start at the Park. The Anabella pool and grounds do look nicer in pictures than BWPPI and we want to relax somewhere outside the Park during the hot afternoons. However, we really don't need to relax by a pool. Going without kids is a new experience for me. Where do adults go for some down time from the park, conversation, and maybe a glass of wine?

Sjwillia, aside from the quality of service, Anabella is not a good idea if you want a quick start to your day. They do have a quick service window, but that can get backed up in the morning and you can't use your concierge vouchers there. You have to sit down at Tangerine and wait for your breakfast to be brought to you and that can be a real time killer. The grounds of the Anabella are nicer than BBPPI, especially the pool area (adjacent to the restaurant) but that doesn't seem to interest you. The Anabella's rooms can be slightly nicer than BBPPI's rooms, but it really depends on your room layout and we've stayed in some that feel dated. While the Anabella has more greenery on its grounds than BBPPI, both are motels so there's a lot of exposed parking lot. Have you looked at the Candy Cane Inn?

For early morning coffee, you can either head to Starbucks in Downtown Disney or Hearthstone Lounge just off the lobby of the Grand Californian. Both places open up before the parks open, but Starbucks can be a madhouse and Hearthstone is a little calmer.

In the afternoon, for a drink, you can go back to Hearthstone or to the Carthay Circle Lounge, both of which have wine and cocktails and small plates. If you're at Hearthstone, I've always found the Grand Californian lobby to be a nice place to relax for a few minutes in the afternoon. Also consider Trader Sam's at the Disneyland Hotel pool area, which is very tiki thematic and the servers make the experience very fun (but I'm not sure they serve wine). On Friday and Saturday evenings, Trader Sam's usually has a live band perform Hawaiian music in the open air seating area just outside the restaurant.

Point is, you don't have to return to your room to find places to relax around the parks.

For some down time, I highly recommend Trader Sam's and Tangaroa Terrace at the DLH. Trader Sam's is worth a visit on it's own, a small, fun tikki bar. You can sit inside or outside on the terrace, which overlooks the DLH pools. The trees, the pools, the drinks are such a nice break from the parks. And, it's QUIET. The bar will take food orders, or you can bring your drinks over to the Tangaora side which is counter service (burgers, shrimp tacos, flatbreads). Enjoy!

We always enjoy our stay at the BWPPI, but if I was going with just one other adult I would try Candy Cane Inn. They have breakfast, a dedicated shuttle, and pretty grounds. I've never stayed there, but have heard such great things it's on my radar in case my husband and I do a getaway.

I thought I'd add my thoughts to the mix. I've not stayed at BWPPI so I can't speak for that, but I have stayed at the Anabella. We really liked our stay at the Anabella a couple of years ago. We had the breakfast vouchers and while I wasn't real impressed with the breakfast it was an ok option. We had 2 adult/2 child breakfast vouchers in our deal (even though the kids were no longer counted as 'kids'). The first morning we spent way too long sitting in the restaurant and experienced very slow service. The following mornings I just called ahead and told them what we wanted, that way I could go over and pick them up at the to-go window while everyone else was getting ready. It was much more efficient. For the adult breakfasts we got eggs, bacon, toast, coffee and juice. For the kids we alternated between waffles or french toast, I believe and added milk (I think that was extra).

We are planning to stay there again this year, but I got a good deal on a room that didn't include breakfast. I just figured it would be easier to have some things in the room to get us going in the morning and we want to do a character breakfast one morning. We've stayed at places that offer a buffet in the morning and those can be a zoo at peak breakfast times. I just want something calmer! Plus, we thought the walk from the Anabella through the Grand Californian was a beautiful relaxing walk and you felt like you were more within the Disney bubble. When we stayed at the Candy Cane Inn one year, even though you didn't have to cross Harbor street to get to DLR, the walk still didn't feel as nice.

Good luck with your decision and I hope you have a great trip!

Thank you all for your help. I did check into the Candy Cane Inn. The grounds look lovely. It costs more than BWPPI but the atmosphere may be worth it. Something more to think about. Thank you also for giving me some options of places to relax during the hear of the day besides a pool or hotel room. I have heard of all you mentioned but have never been to any of them. I guess this adult trip will be my chance.:yay:
