Hello all, my question is regarding my son, who is 8 & very tall for his age.
He is in the midst of ongoing physical therapy for
a permanent condition, which makes it difficult for him to walk long distances.
We never know when his problem will show up
so we take our time as much as possible, but he is energetic and we hate to keep him down.
Earlier this year at WDW we rented a wheelchair
for 2 days, and again last month at a local amusement park.
We're leaning toward purchasing our own wheelchair,
and his PT showed us her suggestion in one of her catalogs today.
She said if we order from the catalog she showed me that she would measure him for it.
I was wondering if anyone here has suggestions/advice/sources
for getting a chair as reasonably as possible.
He is fully mobile, so he only needs the basic type of chair.
The PT suggested getting the lightest one, as well as one that has removeable arms.
The chair I was shown was around $360.
We don't anticipate DS rolling himself under his own power,
we intend to be pushing him any time he needs it,
so we're not sure if the removeable arm is necessary.
The chair at WDW was the normal, adult size they rent out.
DS never complained about comfort and when asked he said, "I'm fine, this is great!"
We may be paying entirely out of pocket for it,
as the referring Ortho Dr. may not be agreeable to
writing a scrip for the chair (if insurance even covers it).
Sorry for the novel, I wanted to give as much info up front
as anyone may need in order to give us some of your wisdom!

If this is a progressive condition I would seriously consider getting something that grows with him rather then a standard wheelchair if your dr will write the script. I would also think about the coolness factor with him being 8 if he will eventually need to be in the wheelchair longer as they have different colors and etc. I think they do have a few different colored standard ones out there. My son is 12 and is not a full time user as he uses his for mainly long distance walking-amusement parks, shopping and when his body is having one of those days. He has a Quickie Zippy 2lite. While he doesn't propel himself much we do have the removeable armrests just in case. Also something I would look out for is if you are going to be pushing it you will want longer handles on the back and maybe even a stroller handle. They can get expensive so I advise if the dr will write the scrip and the insurance will pay for it really think it through of what his and your needs are for it.

If his condition is permanent your insurance should cough up at least a portion. Wheelchairs fall under the "DME" category, Durable Medical Equipment, if you want to look up your policy or call customer service. Also, being a child, he might qualify for additional health insurance or benefits through the state. You may feel like you can cover costs on your own but it doesn't hurt to try, especially if it will be ongoing as the costs add up and equipment is outgrown or needs replacing.

If you don't want to hassle with all of that, or you hit brick walls in the insurance dept. you can try looking for a used chair through an equipment exchange or ask your local children's hospital if they have any sources for used equipment. Craigslist or ebay are options as well. My daughter uses a pretty basic chair and it cost almost as much as a compact car so I hesitate to tell you to go buy a new one. If you do, Zippy was her first chair brand and it lasted 5 years before she outgrew it. It was adjustable for her growth. I'd offer you or old one but A) it's hot pink :rolleyes1 and B) my daughter outgrew it when she was 9 and she is very small for her age so I doubt it would be much use to you. Convaid is another brand and they offer lightweight, folding stroller type chairs but they are even over 1k. Good luck and I hope you find something helpful for him.

Thank you so much for your advice!
DS's condition is permanent,
but he was just diagnosed with it a few months ago
so all of this is very new to us.
I will take your advice & start checking around.

Editing to add: Whoops! Forgot to say thank you
for your generous offer - blessings!

Quickie zippy zone is the new sporty lightweight chair. My daughter got her zippy zone in June.

I agree with the above commenters...you definitely want to order through a reputable company. My daughter is 10 & we FINALLY have found just about the perfect chair for her. Wheelchair shopping is quite a task, & some of the vendors can be as bad as used car salesmen. Do a little homework ahead of time, ask around & research. There is nothing worse than being stuck with a chair that you don't like. Insurance companies usually cover a new chair due to growth every 3 years or so. We got our first chair when Katelyn was 3 and we hated that chair.

When you contact a vendor, United Seating & Mobility is who we used this time, ask if they can bring numerous models for you to see. They will bring different models & maybe even reps from those companies right out to your home. Our chair now is from a company called Colours. We wanted a no frills model...no stroller handles, (which I have slightly regretted). Any options that you add will ad to the weight of the chair & will ultimately make it harder for your son to push himself.

Sorry, I just started rambling a bit!! I have a little experience here!! LOL!! If I can answer any more questions, feel free to PM me!!! I am happy to help if I can!!

These wonderful words of advice & suggestions are exactly why I posted
my query here on the Disabilities Board!
I knew I could get great help here - thanks so much! :thumbsup2

We have 2 differnt products from convaid( they have a great website) the crusair which we have had since my daughter was 3 and she is now 11 and the convertible got last year. Both fold up to the size of golf bags and are fabulous for traveling they also have alot of growth in them so you have them for years. Another big plus is the fabric is washable!!! The one chair we can take it off and wash it the other one we hit with a power washer now and then. Insurance may not cover everything so since you have a permenant diagnosis your child should be able for state medical assistance which picks up any copays the insurance doesn't cover. Most medical supply places don't have samples at least in PA so you have to choose blindly or by comments of others and hope it works
