... It made me start thinking..."Is there even a reason to buy when you can rent?". Can someone help me answer this question?
It appears, based on his signature, that disneynutz, MAY be a source of rental points. IF that is the case, consider it biased...I own at several resorts but only for my own use. Again, in the long term, based on useage, owning will be cheaper.
One other reason to buy over renting is that Disney is looking for ways to shut down the rental market - it is forbidden in the DVC contract - don't think they can but Disney can make it difficult like they are with the resale market
The biggest benefit of owning is that you are in control of your points. Making a reservation involves calling MS and booking it. If your first choice isn't available, you can make all your decisions on the phone right there. Need to move it? You know what your use year is and how possible that is. Need to add a few nights? - you know if you have points. Need to cancel? - you know if its likely you'll be able to rebook. Want to book home at 11 months and at seven see what else is available, not a big deal. At three months want to see if you can switch again - go for it. Want to add the dining plan, switch your ME reservations around, drop the dining plan - a phone call. Don't pay your dues and they cancel your reservation - its your reservation on the line....if you rent and the owner doesn't pay his dues - its your reservation on the line.
With renting, each of these changes involves calling the member you rented points from and seeing if they can and are willing to make the changes for you.
The biggest advantage to renting - you aren't committed.

Exactly! I would not want to buy 8 plane tickets for my family and have it all fall apart. We like being in control, we like being worry free, we like using all of our points!![]()
I was starting to think you had some Bias in your posts.
Renting points will be WAY cheaper than buying if you have to finance your purchase at Disney's 13% interest.
Once you find a good rental source, renting can be a better choice depending how often you vacation at WDW.
You don't have to deal with the rule and point chart changes.
