I am buying into DVC today. How many points are recommended in buying when you first start out. We are looking to go to Disney every year for abour 4-5 nights or use it every other year for about 7 nights. Will 150 points do it for us?

That's a pretty broad question but I think I understand where you are going.......you don't want to buy more than you need but you do what "what" you need.

I can't tell you what the "right" number is because it's undoubtedly different for each family.

First, I would start out by thinking about and then deciding on what size unit you are likely to stay in most of the time. FYI, many seem to feel that the starting place is a 1 bedroom. We don't feel that way at all but it's something you should consider.

Second, I would consider what time of year you are most likely to be going to WDW.

Third, consider the likelyhood of whether you would be going every year, every other year, or every third year.

Once you've thought about each of these things you can then come up with a pretty good approximation of what you will need (at a minimum).

Other things you may want to consider include the ages of your children (if you any) and whether you might take friends or family.

All of these things may enter into the question of how many points you need.

Remember is you plan on staying on Friday and Saturday nights then your points requirements increase accordingly (about double).

I hope this helps you organize your thoughts better. Others are going to chime in with their advice and it's likely they will add things that I have omitted.

Good luck

I second everything that Douglas said and would like to add - whatever # you come up with - be comfortable with it now and a few years down the road (even though you will be adding soon anyway :teeth: - like the rest of us). Also, if you plan to purchase more than the 150 minimum amount, you should consider separating the points (150 + whatever additional numbers you want).

Good luck with your decison and keep us posted.

There is no need to buy all the points that you think you will want right now. Start with the 150 point contract, and once you learn the system, figure out banking and borrowing, know what size accommodations you will regularly use, etc. THEN you can think about adding on.

Also, down the road if you want/need to sell some points, it will be much easier to sell if you have a few smaller contracts as opposed to one large one.

I asked you this yesterday...what is the rush? Why do you have to buy today? The SSR promo is good until Jan. 20th, and the questions you are asking are still very basic--meaning that you still have a lot to learn about DVC. Please do not consider this harsh...not meant that way at all...I think it is AWESOME that you are asking your questions here. However, this is a mjor purchase and should not be rushed into. If possible, take your time, read everything you can here (start with the stickys), search as much as you can (all questions have been asked multiple times, and if you are in a rush for information, using the Search function will be faster for you than waiting for people to reply to a thread).

Good luck.

I agree.

Buying today and don't know how many points you want or need???????? :confused3 :confused3 :confused3

Really, consider waiting and continue to ask questions.

Good advice again Dumbo71!

You really need to sitdown and do some thinking. What sort of room do you want to stay in and will that change in the future. We go with a 2br for the 4 of us, my boys don't share a bed at home and they sure aren't going to start on vacation(well they could, but I would want to be miles away in that case). We figured on 2 trips per year, with some wiggle room in case we wanted to go for spring break.

Good advice so far, but the practical questions you have to answer to know how many points might be right are these.......

When will you be travelling? (Different times of year require different points)
What size unit will you need? (A studio requires less points than a 2 Br)
What resorts will you be staying in most often? (OKW and SSR require less points per night than BCV, BWV, VWL)

Only after you answer those question could anyone have an idea if 150 will be enough to get you the number of trips/nights you mentioned.
