Buying tickets when staying onsite

Do you need to buy passes as part of your hotel stay to be able to use the Express pass perk of staying at an onsite hotel? Or could you make a room only reservation and than buy tickets separately and still show your room card to get to the front of the lines? With the bonus ticket deal that they are now offering, I think it would be cheaper to book the hotel alone and than buy the bonus tickets online.

You only need to show your room key for front of the line so where you buy your tickets should not matter.

No, you show your hotel key (credit card type with name and date on it) for front of the line access. You have to buy your admission tickets as well though.
