Buying something you don't want to spend $$ with a gift card?

When you get a gift card, do you use it to spend money on something you normally wouldn’t treat yourself to and spend the majority of it, or do you get something of a lesser price giving you the ability to get more with the card? I’m always for watching my pennies and like using my gift cards for a few things but then I think “well, just get something with it as a treat you wouldn’t normally spend money on” and not get as much use out of the card? Wondering what you guys prefer.

If I am given a gift card as a gift, I *try* to spend it on something I want, and something I might not normally buy for myself. That's what most gifts are for. However, I do like to squeeze every last cent out of it!

BUT...sometimes situations dictate otherwise. When I was in college (before gift cards) "gift" money usually went towards paying the bills, gas or occasionally getting badly needed new shoes/clothes!

My plan is always to splurge and treat myself because I very rarely ever do but that usually never happens because something comes up or because I'm too cheap and just use it for practical purposes.

One day though, one day!

I could have written this verbatim! One day...
