We are considering buying a resale contract. The big question is should we buy a contract with the same Use Year that we already have (VWL), or does it matter when trying to make reservations. What works best?

Thanks for any suggestions!!

Use Year has nothing to do with making reservations. As long as points will be available for the dates of the reservation, Members may make a reservation at their Home Resort 11 months before the arrival date and 7 months before arrival at all other DVC resorts.

Use Year does determine banking deadlines.

Use Year will also determine when your points will be loaded or become available. So if you currently have one UY say February and decide to add-on with a UY of December those points become available Feb.1 and Dec. 1 respectively. you would need to manage those to banking guidelines as well as manage the borrowing of points. some people can do it, others feel it's easier to keep it under the same UY. it will depend on how you feel, and your comfort level.

Same UY and resort is the easiest to keep track of. Same UY and a 2nd resort can add flexibility but remember that the points from the different resorts can only be combined at 7 months.

Let me understand. If I own 100 pts at each OKW & BLT with same UY and 11 months out I want to make a res valued at 150 pts at OKW I can't really count the 100BLT pts? Trying to wrap my mind around this. Thanks!

Correct. Only at 7 months could you combine all your points. At 7 months, points are points.

So just keep that in mind because many people can not figure out when those points are loaded with 2 different UY. you will need to manage those two different UY because you cannot combine the points until the 7 month booking window. you are looking at two different resorts too.

You can bank and/or borrow at OKW or BLT which would give you more points to make a reservation at either resort at 11 months.

One year you stay at OKW, the next year at BLT and maybe the third year you wait until 7 months to book somewhere else.

Note that if you have two different UY's, those are considered two different memberships, and you cannot combine points for a singe night reservation without transferring from one contract to the other. If they are titled exactly the same with the same UY, even if they're different resorts, they can be in the same membership. Then you can combine points (after 7 months out if they're different resorts) for a single reservation.
