We are DVC members. I am sure this question has been asked, but I am far too lazy to look for it.

We have 200 points per year. My wife and I have three daughters. The middle and the youngest have no problem sharing a room, but not a bed. The oldest wants her own room. We stay in 2Br villas so it works out perfectly.

My question is can we "rent" points from a site (like David's) and combine them with our points? We are trying to figure out if want to purchase 50 more points from DVC.

Thank you!

Your best bet is to do a transfer between members. I believe most DVC brokerage firms and rental stores would be able to facilitate that. Or you could propose your desires on the rent/trade thread on this board.

The only way to combine the points with your own for a single reservation is to complete a transfer. Those points retain their own home resort and UY and you want to be sure they are valid for the trips you want to take.

You are allowed only one transfer per UY, either in or out, so keep that in mind. Renting happens when an owner makes a reservation in their own account using their points and then that is what they rent.

If this is something you see as a need for more than a few years, IMO, adding your own points makes a lot of sense. Even at $18/pt, after 3 years, you have spent $54/pt to get 3 trips? That can be 1/3 of the cost of the purchase price in which you then get them for a long time!

David's doesn't rent points. They rent reservations and charge based on the number of points used.

DVC Store does transfers if you don't want to deal directly with an owner.

Interesting question. I have points to rent/transfer this time, but I'm usually in need of another 30-40 points when we do go. Glad i found these boards, and I'm trying to learn the logistics or transferring/renting out/receiving transfer so i can participate and spot/avoid shady people.

Btw is there a new policy in effect so transfers can only be done with both sender and receiver of points on the phone with MS?

talked to MS about a transfer and according to the CM it’s a new policy that both parties is required on the call. Can’t help thinking if that’s just the way the CM thinks the transfer works and if I call again I might get a different answer.

Does anyone know if this is actually a new policy or just the CM that’s not aware of how a transfer works?

Don't know if its new. I had this happen to me last year.

This was reported a few months back that it is indeed the policy.

Not a fan.

You can rent points from someone who was looking to transfer you their year's allocation. The Rent/Trade board has many folks trying to sell reservations or points. I think once the points are transferred though they're locked into that year (can't bank those specific points)...but don't quote me.

Transferred points retain their home resort and UY. They can be banked. At one time, there were reports that MS would even bank beyond the banking window for the points. Most recently, I have read a few places its not that easy.

Transferred points can not be borrowed so one has to be sure that the points one gets can indeed be used for the trip without needing to borrow them. For example, I have an Aug UY. If I got Oct 2022 UY points, I could not borrow them for a trip in Aug or Sept 2022. Those points, even in my Aug UY, are only valid for dates starting October 1st, 2022.

I would suggest a transfer of points from someone who has the same UY as you. I tried to transfer points to someone with a different UY and they wouldn't let me transfer current points because the owner I was transferring to would "be in a different UY" at the time they wanted to make a reservation.

Transferred points can be banked as long as they are not past their banking deadline. Since transferred points retain their home resort and UY, that banking deadline will be different from the recipient's deadline if the UYs don't match.

It probably had to do with the actual year and not month, For example, a Feb UY is currently in its 2021 year, I could not transfer my Dec 2020 UY points to them, even though that is my current UY.

However, I can send them my 2021 points, which would be good for trips starting Dec 1st.

But, I agree that getting the same month of UY can make it easier to remember the dates they can be used.

I transferred points to someone a few weeks ago. I did have to add the other member on the call with the CM and I so we can go ahead with the transfer. It was just a matter of them confirming some info on their end and that was it.

About how did you or what is the going rate for points?

We get 200 points at SSR annually. If we paid someone to transfer 100 and they were at a different resort, would we be able to use 300 at SSR 11 months out?

I sold my BW points for 18 per point to someone who probably has BW as their home resort as well which will allow them to book 11 months out.

Unfortunately no. Transferred points retain their home resort. You would only be able to make an 11 month reservation with the 100 transferred points at that DVC resort. You would be able to combine them at the 7 month windo.
