We have decided to buy additional points. We are so excited and I think we are now going to make a trip in March in addition to the trip we already have scheduled for September. We love Disney and DVC.

Congratulations! Where from in Louisiana?

We were hoping to purchase more points in the near future and weren't sure if you could buy additional points at a different resort than our current home resort. Additionally, how does the resale thing work? Where do we go to search for points that are for resale? I keep hearing that it can save time and money, but don't know where to start looking.

You can certainly add on points at a different resort. Any points you do, however, can not be combined with your other points until the 7 month window for bookings. So, if you own 100 points at say, BLT and then add on 100 points at SSR, the SSR points can only be used at SSR until the 7 month mark. They can not be combined wtih your BLT points to book at BLT during home resort booking period.

If you buy resale and choose a different UY, it will be a new membership which, IMO, was a hassle--we sold and now everything is under the same UY and the same membership. It is best, IMO, to choose the same one unless you have a real need to have a different one.

There is a link at the top of this page to the board's sponsor, the TimeShare Store. I have used them for both buying and selling and they are great. There are also others out there so just google "DVC timeshares" and you will find them.

We ended up buying through Disney. Our UY is February and Disney has a special through the end of the month for February UY. We got AKL for 100.00 a point, no closing cost, points for 2010 and 2011, and a 500.00 visa gift card.

Briefly... sellers offer their contracts for sale through brokers. You accept their offer or make a counter offer. Once the particulars are agreed upon by both parties (price per point, who pays closing costs & who pays current year maintenance fees), a refundable deposit is paid to the broker/title company. The papers are signed and the resale contract is submitted to Disney. The paper work can be done via email and fax. Disney has 30 days to let the contract proceed or purchase it themselves at the agreed upon price (ROFR - Right Of First Refusal). If Disney exercises their ROFR, the buyer is out of the deal and can get their deposit back or leave it with the broker for the next deal. If Disney passes on the ROFR, you are notified by the broker/title company, they send you the closing documents and the final payment is due. The title company must receive the signed closing documents from the seller as well. It will take about 10 days for the title company to insure the seller is current on maintenance fees and the title is clear and free. Once you receive notice from the title company that the deal is finalized, they will send the Warranty Deed to Disney for them to transfer the ownership to the buyer. The title company usually asks that you allow Disney 7 days to make the transfer before contacting Member Services about your new contract.

There are plenty of details not included above and even more what if's that can delay, change, delay, slow down or delay the transaction. Get my drift? LOL

To answer your question, buying through resale will definately save money but not time. If you purchase direct from Disney, there are no closing costs and your points are added almost immediately upon receipt of payment. As you can see, the resale route might take 40-60 days depending on a host of factors. As for price, depending on which resort you are interested in and the amount of points you want, you can save thousands of dollars through resale. If you are interested in a small contract (25-50 points), it might be better to buy direct from Disney because the closing costs through resale can add $8-18 per point to the purchase price.

The most frequently mentioned resale brokers here on the DISboards are...

- The Timeshare Store
- Resales DVC
- DVC by Resale
- Fidelity Resales

I have used the second and last reseller listed. A Google search will lead you to their website and listings. You will hear good and not so good about each of them depending on personal experience. They are multiple-listing brokers so if you see a contract on one's website but want to use a different broker, that can usually be accomplished. I am doing that right now.

You probably will have a host of questions (I know I did and I still learn more each time I read these threads). Don't hesitate to ask questions of the members here on the DISboards (including me) through posts or private messages. Most are usually eager to help others out. Good luck!!
