Buying Points/ Reservation Inquiries

I am not a DVC member (soon, I hope!), and we are planning a trip on Feb 28 - March 5. (I know, it's late). Before I start communicating with DVC members who are looking to sell ther points, how can I find out if there is even any availability for the time/accomodations/resort that I am looking for? Can a non-DVC member call and find out, or do I need a DVC member to do that?
