Buying Points from Multiple Resorts

I have read on here that some people purchase points from multiple home resorts... or even purchase some points resale and some directly from Disney. Can someone explain to me what the benefit of doing this is? I understand the ability to book 11 months out, but let's say for example I have 50pts at BLT and 50 at AKL, wouldn't I only be able to use 50pts to book 11 months out at BLT and not the total 100?

This sounds silly, but I guess I'm confused... :confused3

Yes you are correct but many people bank and borrow to go very three years on one contract. They would have 150 points with the above scenario every three years per contract.

I'll use my own purchases as an example. I have:

150 points at BWV
80 points at BLT
65 points at VGF

We'll use the BWV contract for our yearly fall Food and Wine Festival trip.

Then we'll alternate years using the BLT and VGF contracts for a late-winter, early spring trip. So that way we'll have 160 points to use at BLT one year and 130 at VGF to use the next.

Hope this helps!

WHYYYYYYYY didn't I think of that?! That sounds like a great idea! We plan to buy resale... I guess it would not be fun to go through the whole process more than once, but its something to think about!

People purchase some resale and some direct for the same reason? Or is there something else I'm missing?

My BWV and BLT contracts were bought via resale and, obviously, VGF was my first direct purchase. I plan to use my points strictly for DVC resorts, so the restrictions on resale contracts (no Disney Collection, DCL or ABD) don't really make a difference to me.

One more thing! What if we had (for example) 50 points at a few different places... can they ever be combined together to go on one BIG trip to somewhere entirely different than any of our home bases... like Aulani? :)

Do they all go under the same account or do they always have to be kept separate?

THANK YOU THANK YOU FOR ALL THE INFO!! So helpful!

are they "add-ons" (all under one member number - having the same UY month and titled the same) or are they separate member accounts?

if everything is under one member number, it's easy to combine pts at 7 months out. you just cannot combine pts from different resorts UNTIL 7 months out.

if you have separate UY months/separate member accounts, it is a little more complicated. you either have to transfer pts between accounts or make the reservations separately and ask MS to link the different reservations...

We aren't currently in this situation, I was just inquiring about it. I meant my scenario to assume that the same person owns points from multiple resorts... I suppose that would mean under the same member number? I really am not familiar with all the ins and outs of DVC just yet... I hope to be very soon though! :)

under no circumstances can pts from Resort A (SSR, for example) be used to book Resort B (BWV, for example) at 11 months out.

at 7 months out, it's easiest if everything is under one member number (which requires that the UY month be the same and the title - the name(s) of the owner(s) - be exactly the same.)

We have multiple contracts at different resorts. VGC was our first/direct purchase as we live on the West Coast. (Good thing too since you now need the home resort advantage to book there since Cars Land was added.)

We have one resale and one direct contract at SSR which we got specifically to add extra points so we could stay at other resorts. We have never stayed there, we just use these to book other WDW resorts. (And I am not knocking this resort by any means. I've heard its very nice, we just haven't stayed there yet. :))

We just added on at VGF with a small contract and will bank/borrow to stay there every three years with those points. This will give us the home resort booking advantage that is definitely needed at a popular resort with a small amount of rooms. Can't stress the lesson we learned at VGC enough. If you want to stay at a specific resort, you should consider buying some points there, unless it is SSR or OKW as those are pretty large and are usually available for booking.

Last summer we booked my extended family in a two bed and a one bed at BLT 7 months out using our compiled points from our VGC and SSR contracts.

All of your contracts should be under the same member number with the same use year. Otherwise, it gets pretty complicated trying to book rooms.

We just bought our first contract for 160 points Dec UY at VGF direct from DVC. We also really like the BW area so here's my plan: buy 200 BW Dec UY from resale and put them on same member number as original VGF (also same exact member name) thinking that I can do the 11 month reservation at each home resort to use the 160 VFG points there and the 200 BW points there. Am I thinking correctly or have I missed something that I need to do to accomplish my objective? Thanks for all of your comments on these boards.

Seems like that will work. Think about a MK vacation one year and a Epcot/DHS vacation the next. You can bank your points and stay twice as long.

We have:

June UY: 1 member #
200 OKW
55 BWV

Aug UY: a 2nd member #
100 AKV
50, 50 and 25 HHI
25 BWV

All bought via resale EXCEPT for the 2 BWV which we just added on recently via direct and did so to get small contracts in our UY and they are hard to find via resale. And I do like the ease of direct buying. We use 100 of the OKW for all over (and MIL/FIL use 100 at OKW which they love), the HHI for HHI, the BWV for BWV (for F&W) and will likely use the AKV for there and other places as DH was not a fan (but AKV is my fave).

We will use the BWV and HHI at 11 month window (HHI is tough to book in warmer months and we want standard view at BWV which is tough). I may have to transfer BWV from one UY to the other. We would prefer that the BWV were all same UY but we initially went on WL for both UY for 55 points and June came through after a week. They inadvertently kept us on Aug UY WL and called, after about 2 months, to let us know there were 55 Aug UY points for us and we couldn't resist taking 25 of those.

We don't care about the things we lost by buying via resale as we will never use our points for those things but my OKW and BWV points do not have those restrictions so I could use them for that stuff...but won't.

I think we have enough points but may add 25-45 more BWV. DH and I hope to do several weeks in the winter at WDW someday down the line...our 3 kids are in HS now and won't be doing the WDW trips with us much in the near future (DS-17 is already done...DDs-15, I think they'll still go for a few more years). Then, in about 10 years or so, we might be doing trips with our kids and their spouses and then grand-babies. And we can also divvy out our points to our kids for their own use (why I like a bunch of smaller contracts, aside from being able to re-sell easily, is we can gift them to our kids and try to be somewhat equal or maybe give them variety...though right now I am not sure how we'd divvy them equally).

Thank you for taking the time to put all of that experience together for me. You guys have been a BIG help. Now, to dive into the pool!

Really great information, thanks everyone! We are hoping to add on by purchasing resale and this gives me ideas what we can and can not do. I really want to add on for F&W. Sigh, I only wish it were cost effective to use points for Disney cruise but that's another conversation.

When you're ready to have that conversation, here's a good place to start: :teeth:
