Buying paint and saving $$

I learned the neatest thing today. Lowes carries contractor sized paint (5 gallon buckets instead of 1 gallon). I needed 9 gallons for inside my house and 1 gallon for outside. At $25 (roughly) a gallon that would have been $250+tax. Instead I bought 5 gallon buckets at that are regularly around $65 but they were 20% off and I had a 10% off purchase coupon. I walked out with two 5 gallon buckets for inside my house and one 1 gallon container for outside for $130! This move has caught us by surprise in the amount of $ needed, so it was really nice to be under budget this time!

DH and I plan to get the 5 gallon buckets that when we start painting our new house. Every room needs to be painted (over 2400 sq. ft!).

2 questions
1. they are 20% off right now?
2. where did you get the 10% off coupon?

congrats on your savings!

Also usually around holiday weekends, there have the valspar rebate on paint. Like over July 4th we bought a gallon of paint and got $5 back. Had we bought a 5 gallon one we would have gotten $20 back. I would guess they would have it Labor day weekend. I think Home depot does it as well.

The 20% off was on a notice on the counter. It was a certain series Valspar 2000 I think, and came off automatically at checkout. I'm not sure if they go on sale often, but even regular price is more cost effective than buying the gallons singularly. The 10% came in the mail b/c we're putting our home on the market to sell. It was this booklet that came from Lowe's but had our realtor's name and picture. Every little bit helps that's for sure. :)

Thanks for posting this, really good to know. My parents will be repainting soon, so the 5 gallon buckets will work well for them. Congrats on saving yourself a bundle!:cool1:

thanks. we normally buy 5 gallon since its the whole outside of the house but if its on sale I will send him over to check it out. I was waiting till the end of the summer to repaint the outside but for a good price I might just do it now..;)

We just did this too. The 20% off is on Valspar 2000 which is their "contractor paint". I wanted to buy a 5 gal container for our interior, but they didn't have the right base in the regular eggshell, so I asked about the 2000 paint. The first Lowe's we went to wouldn't tint it in our color (the guy claimed it could only be tinted specified, off-white, colors), but at the second Lowe's the guy was able to tint contractor paint any color for us.

The contractor 5 gal was like $76 for Eggshell, vs. $105 for the "regular" eggshall. With the 20% off plus 10% (change of address coupon) the 5 gallon bucket came out to around $50! We wound up with 9 gallons of paint (5 gallon bucket and 4 1 gallon buckets) for about $120, much better than the $250 I would have paid for individual "premium" buckets. The coverage is decent, I think the contractor paint does require a little more touching up as you go (not quite as thick), but the end result looks just as good as the room we did in the premium paint.

Cheaper paints fade and are sun damaged much earlier... food for thought.

Behr is much better paint and they just had a rebate program $25 off 5 galleons, $6 off a galleon

$105 - 25% = 78.75 - 10% moving coupon = 70.88

Behr is a much better paint than Valspar hands down

They carry Behr at the Home Depot

the rebate program is right now?

Home Depot and Lowe's usually have areas where they have MT (mistinted) paint. These usually go for $5 for one gallon. So if you are a little flexible with your paint color and can check the stores often you can get a good deal. Sometimes they have it on the 5 gallons (not sure of the price).

I have never used Valspar, but I don't like the Home Depot paint. It is too watery and I end up having to go over everything twice. I usually use Benjamin Moore, but for this price I would try the Valspar.
