Some posters have presented the issue of forking over large sums of money on the rental. But is it that different from renting any other non-hotel accomodation? Such as a cabin, cottage on the beach, chalet at a ski resort? The key is establishing a level of trust on both sides.
Right now I would think renting trumps buying but that may not stay true once the economy goes into a slow steady growth pattern.
Normally when you rent in those situations you a renting from someone who has done a lot of rentals and has a track record and procedures.
The other difference is if you go through CRO or are an actual owner, you have a lot of flexibility on canceling. Once you rent points, you are pretty locked in unless the owner is willing to give you back your money. So you are out of luck if you get sick, or lose your job, or somebody in your family decides that's the week they are getting married.
