Hi-I'm planning on buying a sold out resort thru DVC. I wanted to get the 05 pts so I'm asking for a later use year (aug/oct/dec).
How will this affect banking?
We really didn't plan on travelling until 06?

You will be able to bank all the points the contract comes loaded with if you buy from Disney, regardless of traditional banking deadlines.

In terms of future years, you'll have to adhere to the traditional banking deadlines for your Use Year. Caskill's Vacation Planner program is good to help you keep track.

:confused3 This is not what we were told by our DVC guide (who has been there for many years). We are also waiting to purchase points to a soldout resort through DVC, but our guide told us that the banking deadlines will still apply to our 05 points. Noname70 - I would suggest asking your guide about this just to be sure. And if you are told something different than we were then please let me know - I'd love to be able to bank all of the 05 points.

We just recently added on points at BWV thru DVC with a June UY. We were on the waiting list and our points came thru on May 26th. We got the '05 points and were allowed to bank them immediately, 5 days from the end of the UY.

In fact when I called MS to see if the points were in our account, the first thing she said was "Let's get these points banked, you obviously won't be using them in the next 5 days!"

This really irritates me, although I'm glad for you. When we last added on 200 points in Sept of '04 with an OCTOBER use year, we closed on Sept 7, and were told by the guide and MS, and DVC accounting that we could not bank the '03 points that were current with the contract. We lost those 200 points.

We just added on Tuesday, and will complete paperwork after July 1. Our use year is August, and we were given the 2005 full add on points and the new 2006 ones in August. Because there is only 30 days left in '05 use year, they are making banking exceptions...so we got all the points plus the next year.

Also, DVC waived the '05 dues for the added points. Something to keep in mind w/your guide.

Did you buy from Disney? If so, there also may be different restrictions for existing members adding on vs. new members buying in. (although reading Mr. Disney's post above mine, it sounds like they are letting add-ons be banked too)

All I can do is share my experience from 2 weeks ago, and you all can take it for what it is worth.

I just bought 200 BWV points with an August UY from Disney on Friday, June 9th. My guide told me that I would have to use the 200 '05-06 points by 7/31 or lose them. I posted about it at the other DVC board and Tony Greenbanned, who also posts here, pm'd me to let me know that wasn't the case.

I called Monday, June 12th, to talk to MS about it and make my first reservations, after worrying all weekend about what to do with the 200 points. The first thing the MS representative said to me when she pulled up my account was "Do you want to bank those points? We always lift the banking restriction for new members?"

So, my guide told me the WRONG INFORMATION. MS will let NEW MEMBERS bank the points that come with their contract if they buy from Disney.

:woohoo: That's great news - this is one of the few times when I would be very happy if my guide was wrong about what he's telling us.

Also - Elaine - what's the other DVC board that you mentioned?

Todd

I'll pm it to you - I don't want to advertise for another site here. :)

I was pretty annoyed at my guide too - actually, it was a guide filling in for my guide who was vacationing this month. I have my own beliefs about why that misinformation about buying points for sold-out resorts vs. SSR is being shared.

Well first off let me thank all of you who have been patient w/my many questions. I just bought the 150 pt VWL contract thru DVC. :thumbsup2

HOWEVER...my guide (DVC vet-extemely nice-been there from inception) insisted that I must use the 05 points (no banking)! I told her what I have read here and she said that she thinks that DVC will only bank the 05 points for exisiting members (not first timers). So must I take a fast, unplanned trip to Orlando? I decided to buy thru DVC instead of resale because I didn't want any hassle-now I have hassle.

Can anyone help :confused3

Noname70,

I would suggest that you get the name of the Member Service representative that *elaine* spoke to (since we know that person has banked points for an owner) and call that person to clarify whether or not you will be able to bank the points. It seems there is a disconnect between what the Guides are telling owners (and soon to be owners) and what the the MS representatives are telling owners. Please let us all know what the MS representative tells you. Good luck.

*elaine* - I would also like to get the name of the MS rep that allowed you to bank the 05 points. That way when we finally get our points I'll be able to ask for that person. Thanks.

Same here. We just added 180 points with Oct UY at VWL and were able to bank all 2005 points. Fees will be prorated for 2006 from our closing date on.

I was afraid we'd have trouble banking the 2005 points but when I called member services, the very first thing they did was ask me if I wanted to bank all of the 2005 points.

Why not call member services and see what they tell you when you try to bank your newly purchased points?

Thank heavens I wrote her name down! :) I'm usually bad at that. :sad2:

Anyhow, I spoke with Adrian (sp?) on Monday the 12th - she was the one who banked my points for me and helped me make my first reservation. She was very nice and very helpful!

Keep in mind that the banking percentages are based on the total points owned, not just the ones added on.

Even based on total points owned, I shouldn't have been able to bank 2005 points that I just bought. We have 180 2005 points we just banked and 330 total owned points.

I banked 100% of the points that I own (because the 200 I bought are all I own), 7 weeks before the end of their Use Year - a time at which, in future years, I will be able to bank 0% of my points. I don't think that percentages come to play in the unique situation we are talking about on this thread - i.e., buying or adding on points direct from Disney near the end of a Use Year.

When I added on at VWL earlier this year the fees were pro-rated from when I got the points in my account which happened about 24 hours after I gave my CC info to my guide. Closing occurred more than a month later and I was billed for the fees at that time but based on the amount I was charged, the fees were pro-rated starting on the date I got the points.

If you were told something different (and are billed based on your closing date) please let me know! Either I am due a refund, or you are going get a bigger bill than you were expecting. Thanks!

Hi all,
After putting $$ down, check DVC website "Points" section. If your new total points show up, call MS. Tell the MS person you just added on and they will bank them automatically for you. Plus, we already booked our 06 vacation, and she was very nice and "swapped" out the banked points for me so I could bank the remaining 06 ones.

If you have any problems, let me know. My MS lady, two different ones, said they were told to bank for add ons now.

Good luck

No, I'm sure you are correct and I typed the wrong thing. It will be from when I got the points on that I pay the fees. In my mind, I closed as soon as I paid for the points although I know the official closing isn't until later.

I would have preferred that you were correct since I might have had 4-6 weeks of dues coming back to me. But it does make sense that the dues would be pro-rated from the day we have use of the new points.

I know what you mean about feeling like you closed as soon as you get the points. Seeing those points appear in my account was the goal -- who cares about the paperwork!
