Ok, I THINK this is the correct board to post it on... since buying luggage is part of "trip planning"...

We are flying with BA in October and also have some US domestic flights with AA (which already has a 55lb per piece limit), so I was already thinking about luggage. We currently have two HUGE (they measure 26" x 18" x 10"), EXPANDABLE cases (one case each). Needless to say these EASILY get close to the 30kg mark each... :sad2:

So I am looking to replace our two old fairly heavy samsonite cases with three slightly smaller, more lightweight cases....

Does anyone have any suggestions about what/where to buy? There is LOTS of great luggage available to buy, but you can easily spend £250/£350 per piece - would like to keep it a lot lower than that...

Any suggestions/recommendations?

Boo

Delsey hard 'Volume' cases are very good, combination locks, very durable and you can buy them in a variety of colours - may sound strange but doesn't half make them stand out when you collect your bags.

They are normally around £50 each I think - we have 3 , red/lilac/yellow ;)

Hi we also have the hard type samsonite cases. They were about £70 each - also have them in bright green and red what a difference in the sea of black on the luggage carosel!!!!!!!!! :rotfl2:

That's right - it really is a help when they stand out like ours do too....having said that last year 3 bright yellow one's came out one after another

A lot of people have said to us what a good idea it is to have colourful cases.

We've got a Victorinox/Swiss Army one and a Timberland one. The Timberland one is certainly different to others you see, so stands out well on the carousel. The Swiss Army one is red, so again is better than black, but there are also quite a lot of red cases around.

Both are soft cases, but we have never had any damage to their content, and we have carried some delicate items many times.

Not a big fan of hard cases, as, with the ever decreasing allowances you've got dead weight of a few kg's in the case alone.

yeah that's a good point and is something I have been thinking about, we are planning on travelling a little lighter so touch wood we will be ok.

My mum bought me one from Argos a few years ago. It's huge but light as it's not a hard case. When we were flying out I dug about in a box of old toys and stuff and found some hair scrunchies from when I was little. I tied them on the handle and I never miss it now! Keep an eye out on "Claire's Accessories" type places when they have sales on - you can normally pick them up for a few pence.

Just remember that you have to use special TSA approved locks if you are locking your cases though.

I noticed when I was in the Samsonite store in London they now do a lightweight range which really are lightweight for a suitcase.

I have not seen it on ebags, or the normal deparment stores that samsonite.

I have not used them, but I want some. After all I have had my samsonite case for 5 years, and its been possibly millions of miles (2 trips to australia a year, 6 to the US for business plus personal travel) and it still looks good a new. And when its damaged samsonite fixed it for free.

Thanks everyone for their tips, suggestions and advice - all very useful :)

dazeddaisy, any idea what the model name of the case you are interested in is? Also any idea of prices?

Thanks,
Boo

I just ordered QVC's TSV which is a 6 piece luggage set for this very reason. We have two very large cases which we used to take but one of them always got a "heavy" sticker and there is no way it would be under 23kg.

I'd love some details on this range if anyone can help, can't find them on the tinterweb, it's about time I changed my fluorescent orange and (tasteful) lime green suitcases - a nightmare walking through the airport with them, but a godsend at the baggage claim point! :rotfl2:

The todays special value on QVC is a luggage set, not brilliant but very good,m we have picked up Ciao luggage in the US and it is more resliliant than the usual non rigid luggage. YOu can also see it online

Sorry TinkaToo just saw that you posted aobut this as well.

There was a few versions I looked at. Once was called D'lite and the other F'lite. There was another model but I for the life of me can not remember the name. For the large suitcase it was about £100

Give me a fews days and I will either go back to the store, or remember it.
