Buying magic bands ?

When my hubby and I were there in Febuary staying on property as a couple we loved the convenience of the magic band. We noticed that they seemed to be selling the magic bands in the store as well. I was wondering if when we take the kids to Disney next year if we end up having to stay off property with them are we able to purchase magic bands to use so we could connect their tickets and fast passes to them? Or is that just a perk of being on property? Can u only buy them if you're staying at a Disney resort? Thanks!
