Buying Apple Products in the U.S.

OK so I was wondering if anyone else has bought Apple ipods whilst in the U.S. and if they easy to charge once back here, I'm pretty sure that they have the dual voltage but I wanted to check.

I was also wondering about holding off and buying my new MacBook until then - I need one now though and I have a previous Vaio that I bought in the States but the keyboard is a little different to the ones I am used to here in the UK. But has anyone else bought a Mac in the U.S.

All the Apple products do seem cheaper out there than here - but I am also worried about if anything goes wrong with the Mac Book here, I may just go for peace of mind and buy it here, but get the ipod in the States.

We have not bought computers from Apple in the US only Ipods - as far as I can remember we registered them once back in the UK so would be covered by UK warranty. I have a feeling it may be worldwide cover although I could be wrong.

We are also thinking of buying a mac book whilst in the US due the price difference. I know the keyboards will be slightly diffrerent but don't really mind.

They are dual voltage so will be OK to charge. May need to buy a US to UK plug adapter though.

Sam, we've bought iPods in the US with no issues. The voltage doesn't really come into it, as the latest versions are only packaged with USB/Firewire cables to charge via your PC. You can then just but an adaptor to plug into the mains when you get back to the UK.

Wouldn't imagine there will be any issues around charging the Macbook, but like you said I guess there is a warranty issue to consider.

As you said you will save yourself a lot of money.

We bought our Ipod in the mall at millenia, saved around £60 at that time.

We were in orlando 6mths later and had a problem with the headphones, we went into the shop said we had a problem and the exchanged them without even questioning where we'd bought them or when for that matter.

I think I'll deffo buy the ipod out there and then I've checked out the savings on macs and I'd only save myself just over £100 and to be honest I think for something that big I'd rather go with peace of mind and buy here LOL I know I'm a wuss (sp?) also that way I get to set it all up before I go.

Sometimes I just have to talk these things out loud, you nkow?

Hi Sam! Do you know anyone at higher/further education? My son, who's at Uni, has just bought a new macbook (on my behalf) via Apple's Education website. I'm sure the saving was around £90 - also bought a nano and, as ordered together, will receive a voucher to claim £100 back. Just a thought...

LOL don't panic Paul I'll still have my Windows Dell desktop - the Mac is for all my media stuff I'm in love with I-photo and I-DVD as well as the integrated i-sight - plus I needed something that was going to go with me on my travels.

the keyboard is a little different to the ones I am used to here in the UK

We bought both the iBook and the iMac in the UK and the keyboards are both US stylie.

We're PC central in this house - we've got 2 Dell Desktops and 2 Dell laptops as well as the iMac and iBook. I never imagined saying this, but I prefer the Macs. Once you find your way around, there are some really cool features such as Expose, hot corners and multiple browsing in tabs. I also like the look and functionality of the Apple specific software (iTunes, iPhoto, etc). And of course, Macs look great. The only disappointment for me is the speed. I wasn't particularly surprised with the iBook, but we've got a new generation iMac (with Intel Core Duo) which is supposed to make it fast. I think there may be some capatibility problems which are yet to be ironed out.

You will have to check if you will make much of a saving. In the Apple store in the Florida Mall it was only £10 cheaper to buy a Nano there than at home, this was in July.

Sam have you checked out the refurb store on the Apple UK site! They have some fantastic deals on Ipods at the moment. My BIL bought a mac mini from them earlier in the year and saved over £100. The product was like new and came with full warranty!

Don't do it!!!! The last decent computer Apple made was the Apple II. It's PC's and any other MP3 player for me rather than anything that Mr Jobs produces!

We have brought several PC's and Macs in the US and they have all been covered by an international warranty! had a few minor issues with them and have all been sorted out quickly!

You have already said that you don't want to buy the Mac in the US for peace of mind - I am completely with you there! I am just going to be very boring and mention the duty free allowance. Ipods probably won't make a lot of difference, especially when the amount goes up next year, but a PC has to get a lot cheaper before you can go through the green channel with a clear concience. It's just one more calcuation as to whether it is a good price to buy in the US rather than here.

I love all the apple products I have purchased so far and so whether or not I buy an Apple product versus another was never in question, but I appreciate that everyone has their own thoughts on which products they would choose to buy or not buy, but like I said that wasn't my question.
