Buying American Girl dolls?

Here are the pictures.

This is the box the doll and the clothes came in.

This is the doll inside her own box.

My DD had her heart set on the just like me doll that has brown eyes and brown hair with blond highlights. When the newest catalog came out the just like me doll with brown hair and blond highlights now comes with BLUE eyes. Well DD's eyes are brown.

I panicked.

I phoned and the operator found some of the old style just like me dolls available for shipping.

Here is the doll with and without the book that she comes with.

Here is most of her stuff spread out. I ordered 8 outfits, coconut (well the dog came with the doll) and a brush. I also got her the matching P.J.'s for her and her doll. The blue satin ones.

Okay playtime is over for me.

Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you Diamond!! You are the best for posting these photos. I really appreciate it. I was wavering on how much to get for my DD for Christmas, but seeing it all laid out like that, well I am sticking to my original plan. After all you are only a little girl once. What a super mommy you are!! She will love her doll.

I just took a peek at your PTR and am going to start it now.

She's beautiful. Doesn't it make you want to play all over again. I think dolls are just wasted on the young Sometimes I want to get out the clothes and the dolls and dress them. I'm trying to call it therapy. A great form of stress relief. What does everyone think?

Natalie, I agree with you. Espcially when my own DD will not let me pick out the clothes she needs to wear!! I try to give her a choice, but they are my choices!!

Maybe I will tell DH that is what I want for Christmas, just an AG doll for me. Trouble is I don't think they make a Just Like Me doll that is 37, pregnant with major morning sickness and all the lovelyness that entails!!
My DH did buy my a doll though, when we were dating many moons ago. He was and still is, so sweet. I really like all dolls, but have a thing for baby dolls and porcelin dolls ( not so much the porcelin anymore though). For my b-day, about 13 years ago, he bought me this beautiful porcelin baby doll, hand signed by the artist and numbered. She came in a beautiful gown, bonnet and blanket. He then bought me an old fashioned doll pram from this local "antique" type place. It is a real showpeace and sat in our living room for a long time. So, I have been lucky that way. You can't really play with that doll, so I need a new friend. I mean my DD does!!

Diamond, I have just started your PTR/TR/TR from your two trips. I must say, you have beautiful children. They are so sweet and your descriptions of them, their personalities etc.. well,I can see just how much you love them for who they are. I was really touched by your words. Your family is lovely.

Your children share some similar qualities with my DD, nothing specific, but I found myself smiling at various comments and thinking," that is Emily to!"

You have a great way of describing things ( I love your opening line about Disney attaching itself to your heart. I feel the same way) and your honesty is refreshing. I have to stop reading now as I should have been in bed about two hours ago, but I will check out the rest on the weekend.

Okay... so now that I was so sure about the Bitty Twins, I was online last night looking over the outfits and such, trying to decide exactly what I was going to buy, when DD came over to see what I was doing. I told her I was looking at dolls, for me, and that I might ask her daddy or Santa to get me one, LOL, and I showed her what I was looking at.

She said it (a Bitty Twin) was cute, but she wanted the big girl doll like her friends at dance class have. Ugh! But at least now I know exactly what she wants. A Just Like You doll with blond hair and brown eyes, and she also likes Kit. So much for all the thought I put into it over the past few days, LOL, but better to know know I suppose, before I ordered.

I did explain to her that if she wanted to ask Santa for a big doll she wouldn't be able to have matching clothes because they don't come in her size. She was okay with that. I was looking forward to seeing them match, but oh well, I guess I can wait. She'll be in size 6 eventually.

Oh Tracey, that is a riot!! But it is better for you to know. My DD has looked at the catalouge so many times, but I was thinking last night that I had better get her to look once more before I order so I get exactly what she wants! These kids, but it is for them! I would have been so frustrated to though, if I was you.

That reminds me of a "funny" story I have to share. My DD decided she wanted to learn to ice skate this past summer, instead of playing soccer. So I signed her up and at first she did not like it, but she changed her mind when she saw the cute skating outfits you wear in competitions and stuff liek that. I told her she could not wear that stuff for a bit, until she actually could skate and was fine with that. I think this also fueled her desire to have the Mia doll because she is a skater. Anyway, I asked DD about ten times if she wanted to have skating or swimming lessons in the fall and winter because I had to register her in August. Even though the lessons are through our local Parks and Rec the spots fill up fast. My DD has been doing the swimming for over two years and does love it, but she said she wanted skating. I double, triple and quadruple checked with her and explained that if she choose skating there would be no swim lessons. She said fine.

So, I registered her skating from Sept to March. WHen last week rolled aroudn with no swimming, only skating she was so upset. I mean tears, the whole nine yards. I thought I would scream ! Long story short I was extrememly lucky to get all the skating switched to swimming and she started swimming last night. No more skating lessons. We get to the pool and low and behold the competitive skaters are practising. Guess what she wants? I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. We watched the skaters for a bit and finally left. I said to her, "maybe in another life" and left it at that.

Moral of my long winded story, even double, triple and quadruple checking things will still come back to haunt you. I can never win!

pl'smama learning how to make decisions is just another part of growing up. It can be frustrating watching her go through this (and obviously challenging on your pocket book) but it sounds like you've been through some very teachable moments with it.

Thanks for visiting my pre-trip which is just about to become a trip report as I am back now. Perhaps if I stopped "playing in the basement" I could get it started.

Thanks Diamond, you are so right about this experience. I believe that her first love is swimming and that she is happy with it, but yes it is frustrating for both of us to deal with the indecision. Ya know, once the dust settles it is kind of nice to have a lesson come out of all of this.

I agree to that Tracey (icemom) should check out the DISboutique section. They do amazing work over there.

I just wanted to add that I found the matching outfits that AG has tend to run on the small size for the little sizes. I bought a size 6 outfit for my neice and it was way too small. Also the clothes I found are slim fitting too so great for some kids, not for all.

I was never really into the porcelin dolls. I always liked dolls that I could play with and dress. I'm sure that we could find a way to make one of the Just Like Me dolls look like you. A little kleenix under her shirt would give her a little bit of a belly. You might have to answer some questions about how your doll got to be in this condition but it would be funny and just like you. When they start to make the dolls with the hair that is starting to go a little grey, and could stand to loose a few pounds we'll know that AG is really looking at the big picture, the Mom's with the $. And I'm going to be first in line to buy one of those dolls. I bet her clothes will be awsome.

Don't feel too bad about your daughter not letting you pick out her clothes, my 11 daughter stopped letting me do that years ago. Now she just rolls her eyes at me. It does lead to some interesting colour combinations and choices. I now only tell her she can't wear something if it really isn't suitable to go out in public,at least not with me. I figure that this way she is developing her own style.

Natalie, AG should get the jump on Barbie and create a "real" looking doll for us mommies who love to play. They'd make a killing for sure!! Funny what you said about answering how my doll got pregnant. The other day my DD, 5, said somethign about little girls being mommies and I said, "no not until you are married etc.." She said, "I could just put a pillow under my shirt!" I just about died. Where do they get these ideas from?

You reminded me that I have to put out DD's clothes for school tomorrow. I am usually gone to work by the time she gets up so DH can deal with the fall out in the am!!
