Buying ahead & size question...6 vs. 6x

I was thinking of buying a coat and putting it away for next year so I could take advantage of some of the sales going on right now. Right now she is just getting in to size 5 and she is thin. What is her next size, I see there is 6 and 6X, what is the difference? thanks!

My own DD is just turning 7 so I had this exact same quesstion last year. What I was told is "6-7" tends to be a transition year for a lot of kids when they tend to get a little leaner and their limbs get longer. The 6x size is for the kids who are bigger than a "6" but whose proportions aren't quite right for a "7" (the arms and legs on 7's are too long). I think with a coat it isn't going to matter as much unless she has really long arms.
Hope that helps and maybe someone else has a better explanation. Also remember individual brands really vary in sizing. Osh Kosh and Gymboree are always big on my kids while Children's Place seems to almost run a size smaller.

If your DD is just now getting into a 5, then a 6x would be a safe bet for a coat next year. A 6 may not last the year and a 7 may be too big to start the year.

6x is an in-between size for girls that are too thick (sorry can't think of a better word) to fit in a 6 but their arms and legs are too short to fit in a 7.

All 'x' sizes are basically equal to husky sizing on boys clothes.

My oldest is way too short for juniors pants but can't fit in a 16 girls anymore so she wears the 16x pants. Fit her perfectly around the middle and are also good on length instead of being 6" too long. LOL

For a skinny one, skip 6x sizing and go to a 7 esp for a coat. The odds are the 6x will be too short in the arms. My youngest is skinny (not sure how I got 2 girls with polar opposite body types! LOL) and none of the 6x pants I passed down to her form her sister fit her body at all. It's just not to her proportions unfortunately.

For pants I'm in looooove with the stretchy waist bands... With pants look for 7 slims if she tends to be slender...

A friend (Mom of Girls) informed me that for some reason girls size don't go 5, 6, 7 (that would make too much sense), instead its 5, 6, 6x, 7... don't ask me... but its been very true for my DD8.

I wish DD could fit in juniors even if I had to pay more. She's apple shaped, I guess that's what they call it. It seems she's inherited her father's torso shape and not mine. I feel badly for her and shopping for clothes is a nightmare.

And I'd agree on the buying ahead for clothing at this age. You really never know although I think buying a 7 in a coat would be safe since the odds are good she'll be able to wear it next year.

don't get your dander up. My oldest had to wear the 6x's. It's the easiest way to describe the 'x' clothing to someone who hasn't dealt with it before. If you've outgrown size 6, you are too thick in the waist for it, doesn't mean your child is fat!

Great, thank you for the responses. DD is just getting in to size 5 now (at 5 1/2) and she doesn't grow to quickly so I think I'll be ok buying ahead. Thanks for the sizing info., it clears it up, although its very confusing!
