now i might be over thinking this but here is what just came to my head bare with me. i have 160 points for resort 1. i buy 50 points for resort 2. i want to use the 11 month window for resort 2 so in theory i can use 100 points after i buy it to reserve. when the 7 month window comes into play could i call them up and re book it with just the current year points? since i have the room reserved they would do a cancel rebook. now this would be done for this reason. I have SS and i want bay lake or say the new grand Floridian. i would always have 100 points to book 11 months out and that should get me what i want. i probably over though this. do i make any sense.

Well, in theory, that could work and sounds like a great idea. However, the possibility of getting the same reservation at the 7 month mark could be unlikely, depending on the resort availability and the time of year. For example, trying to book BLT for a 2 bedroom the first weekend of December isn't availble 9 months out, let alone 7 months out, so in that scenario, your plan would not work. However, if you wanted to book a random weeknight stay in a less desirable time, that might work. Either way, you would have the reservation you really wanted at the 11-month mark, so that works for you :cool1:

May I ask where you're getting the 100 pts from? Are you borrowing them from the next year? If so, I don't think you can "return" them once borrowed. Although I could be wrong about that. So then you would have to use them.

Unless...you use the borrowed points, which I don't think you can return, then when you re-book with only the 50 plus resort 1's 160 points then bank the current years 50 points to be used the following year? Then the only problem I believe is that to cancel/rebook might be an issue where you might lose out on the original booking during the change over.

Sorry, maybe I'm misunderstanding.

Disney has designed the system so if you want to guarantee your stay at a certain resort, at a certain time, you need to own there.

i'm assuming banked pts + current pts. ok...

you cannot simply reallocate pts to defeat the home resort advantage if there are no other rooms available at resort 2.

(many have tried - but if you want to book at 11 months out, you need that home resort's pts.)

if there is availability at resort 2 - not counting the room you have reserved with resort 2 pts - you may cancel and rebook using resort 1 pts.

but then, you could have done that anyway...no advantage gained...

the original room that you reserved with resort 2 pts that you canceled goes to whomever is next on the waitlist...

As I understand, Aulani is the only DVC offering "Fixed Weeks" via Sales. These Fixed Weeks are the only way to guarantee a certain stay by Resort and Date. Outside Fixed Weeks there are no guarantees even by owning points at a given resort?

99% of the time booking at 11 months at your home resort will get you the resort and date that you want.

That 1% would be Club Level at Jambo and VGC because it's so small.

i was just bouncing off an idea everyone i am looking to add some points and i kinda dont see the point of adding a few points 25 to 50 at another resort. you can really book any real vacation with those points. so it almost seems to just get them at your original resort

where are you getting the 100 always pts from?

...i kinda dont see the point of adding a few points 25 to 50 at another resort.

We bought a 50-pt add-on at HHI to vacation there every third year. We use our AKV points to go to WDW 2 out of 3 years and then do HHI on our "off" year. Our 5-night stay in a 1BR is 135 points so 50 points is more than enough. Since there are only 21 1BR's at the resort, we wanted to secure the home resort advantage. So, a small add-on at a second home resort isn't entirely pointless;).

DVC has been giving last years points as a bonus when you purchase a new contract through them. We bought another contract last year and this is what we received as a bonus.

my idea was always repaying the 50 points when the 7 month window opened up with points from the other contract. doing a rebook. i thought about it bc i just booked 1 week at the BVC and i did it saturday to saturday. i wanted to stay 2 nights at the AKV so i booked the 7 nights first and then i called up the next day and canceled 1 night and booked the first 2. this allowed me to lock up the BCV for the week a day before the 7 day window. they did everything seemless.

That's not entirely true. If you buy a contract in calendar year 2012 with a Use Year month that hasn't happened yet, you are technically still in the 2011 Use Year and they are required by law to give you the points for that UY. So if you're going down in May and have to choose between an April UY or a Jun UY, just know that you will get double the points if you buy Jun. Now whether or not you have to pay maintenance fees on them is another story.
