OK, I've been coming to photography boards for awhile and you all have always suggest good cameras to me and now once again Im looking.

I have a canon S95 and Nikon d3100 (just sold) as I didn't use it that much and I preferred my P&S instead. Nothing against the Nikon but with the 3 lens I had and 2 younger kids it was just too much. I only tended to break it out during special occasions and holidays. took it to DL and WDW and it mostly sat in our room. So that being said I'm ready to spend my cash on a good camera that is not lens interchangeable.

I want a camera that is fast and has a good zoom, mostly take pics of the kids, beach and disney trips and everyday life pics.

So far I've researched;
Sony RX-100m2 which is on the top of my list. ( I played with the RX-100)
Canon S120 being released in Oct.

Any others I should be checking out?

I saw the Canon G something and thought that might be a good one as well?

Any input would be great!!

I've had the Sony RX100 for a year now and just love it. It's fast and has a terrific picture quality. I can't comment on the other cameras or give any other suggestions but can give a big thumbs up to the Sony RX's. :thumbsup2

Thanks! Im hearing good things about it :)

The Canon G16 has more and faster zoom than the s95, but is a bulkier package.
The G1X is even bigger, but is one of few PnS that can claim a bigger sensor than the RX100/M2.

The RX-100 is really nice and with it going for $550-$600 is a great deal. I really like mine.

Love the Rx100 but some other very god compact cameras to consider include the Panasonic lx7 and Canon G1x. I'd probably end up with the rx100 again, but those others could be worth a peak.

Between the two I would pick the Sony. There seems to be nothing but great things said about the Sony online. If you search YouTube you can see quite a few reviews with favorable outcomes. Also have you considered the Fujifilm cameras? Like the X100s or the X20.

I just got the Canon G15 and love it! It's a replacement for my G11 that just broke, so I might be biased ;)

I have my Sony A55 and A77 but wanted a decent "Point and Shoot" for when I didn't want to lug around the big boys.

I was also so disappointed in most of the point and shoot options out there. With their small sensors, they all lacked somewhere.

I have been reading abouth the Rx100 since release but never pulled the rigger.

Then Rx100m2 was released and just had to have that. Just bought it this week. Every review I read was positive, the improved 1" sensor, multitude of features, great low light performance, and great image quality just sold me. Even picked up an extra battery and charger.

If the price tag doesn't scare you. The RX100m2 is the way to go!

If you get a chance and you're willing could you post some photos from your new toy?

I will if I get a chance (and remember to ).

Anyway, I finally got a chance to test drive the RX100m2 this weekend. Didn't take a ton of pics with it, but ran through a lot of the available options.

Just a quick note about me. 1. Been into photography for a long time. 2. Got back into more "serious" photography about 3 years back picking up my 1st DSLR in a long time. 3. Photography should be fun and I like having fun. 4. I am a mostly jpeg shooter. I like getting the pic right out of camera and limiting post processing time.

1st the negatives about the camera.

1. You NEED & WANT to buy the separate charger for the batteries. Charging in camera takes 2-3 times longer than w/ the charger.
2. For a pocket size camera, there are a ton of options and features. That's a good thing right? BUT there are just not enough buttons for it all. That's really a minor thing.
3. I am not a fan of the front control ring that is on the lens itself. It can be used to zoom, change functions, you can assign things to it etc, but for me it's just too small on a small camera. Not like the larger rings on a larger DSLR but it tries. Other's may really like it.

On to the good. I am skipping the stuff you can read in the product specs on every other website. Let's keep it simple:

1. Super fast focusing.
2. Great battery life. I had the RX on for quite awile playing with options, taking pics, changing options etc. The battery charge hasn't lost anything yet.
3. The RX is built like a tank. Will not be worried about taking it EVERYWHERE.
4. Great pics right out of the camera. Nice sharpness overall.
5. Great low light performance. Being able to use this pocket cam indoors w/o flash is awesome and surprising. Every P&S that I had previously HAD to have flash or it would be a high ISO grainy mess. Call me nuts, but I even took some shots this weekend indoors at ISO 12800. Once I loaded them into my PC, they were actually decent. There was some loss of detail and the grain was noticeable in dark areas, but it wasn't that bad. They would be good for prints up to 4x6 I think.
6. Great selection of photo styles and affects. A lot of them are pretty fun and artistic. I loved these options with my A55 and A77 and it's great to have them in a smaller body.
7. The built in flash is pretty good. Being able to tilt to bounce off the ceiling is so nice.
8. Even though the instruction book is less than stellar, the camera is easier to pick up and learn with time and experimentation. I pretty much figured it all out in less than an hour and had the camera set up the way that I wanted. If your not used to a P&S with this many option, it may take you a little longer. ;)

Well that's it for now. Thanks! :thumbsup2
