Buying a mobile in USA???

Does anyone know if buying a mobile from the States is worthwhile?I know Tri-band phones work in both countries but I do not know if they can or need to be "modified" to accept my pay as you go sim card.I do not even know if they are any cheaper over there.Has anyone any info or experience of this?

do you want one to use in the USA while you are on holiday, or are you thinking of bringing it home to use at home too?

I have heard of people buying a TracPhone to use in the States while on vacation, but I don't think anyone has mentioned buying one over there to use back here - If there was a big savings to be had, then I would have thought it would have been mentioned in the past.
